WRITE TIGHT

Cut out the deadwood. Tightly written pieces keep the reader turning the pages, wanting to know what happens next. You may love a particular passage, but will your readers love it? Will the agent, publisher or editor you’re pitching think your writing is compelling? Phrasing that goes nowhere, even if beautifully written, is cumbersome and therefore a minus, not a plus. Events and words repeated over and over or going off on tangents that don’t move the story only weaken your work.

I thoroughly enjoyed Morgan's words of wisdom last night. It was definitely beneficial.
I woke up this morning, had my coffee, took a shower and immediately reached for my machete. :-)

If you read this comment, Morgan, thank you.

I enjoyed the meeting. I like the note Morgan wrote for me inside her Writers' Tricks of The Trade I bought: "Read a little every day Write every day."

My first meeting with Morgan as the guest speaker. A very accomplished presenter of her art. I definitely attend when/if she speaks again

I always learn something when Morgan St. James gives a talk.
Severat things this time, but especially the idea of using Word Count to keep track of how you're fitting your narrative into the preferred structure. Seems so obvious once said, but it was an "AHA!" moment for me...also a "Doh!" moment.

It was great to meet Morgan and learn the word 'that' is now an enemy to writers.

It was a great meeting. Morgan opened my eyes to reviewing my work in a different light. The word "that" is no longer my friend but just an acquaintance. So excited for the Writer's Conference!

I'm new to the area, so new that my apartment won't be ready until the 20th. I'm coming by to touch bases and to see what your group is all about.

Can I share something wonderful? Spunk got a glowing brief review in Publishers Weekly Select: "O'Reilly delivers a fascinating novel about a group of women and girls who, in postapocalyptic New York City, belong to an Amazonian society that believes men are no longer a necessity in the world. In an effort to survive, the women—who live in a forest that now covers Manhattan—capture men to perpetuate their community, only to exterminate them when they have served their purpose. O'Reilly's characters are well drawn, and her prose straightforward and startling: "At first, and at Buffy's suggestion, the women had tried a sort of rough-and-ready castration technique that involved twine and a sharp knife, but the results were predictable: death by exsanguination." Highly original and visceral, O'Reilly's book announces itself like a newborn baby straight from the womb: with a guttural cry that abounds with possibility. "

    Pass the smelling salts!
