February Meeting

Join us for an evening with Tera Lynn Childs.

Tera Lynn Childs is the award-winning author of the mythology-based young adult novels Oh. My. Gods. and Goddess Boot Camp (both from Dutton Children’s Books), the mermaid novels Forgive My Fins, Fins Are Forever, and Just For Fins (from Katherine Tegen Books, an imprint of HarperCollins) and a new trilogy about monster-hunting descendants of Medusa, starting with Sweet Venom and Sweet Shadows, with Sweet Legacy coming this fall (also from Katherine Tegen Books). She has also self-published two fun chick lit romances, Eye Candy and Straight Stalk.

Tera will discuss:

Building a writing career takes more than writing a book and sending it out into the world. As modern authors, we have to juggle the creative side with the business and make important (and sometimes hard) decisions along the way. Since starting to write in 2003, signing with her agent in 2005, and selling her first book in 2006, Tera has sold eight hardcover books to two New York publishers, weathered an editor's move followed immediately by an agent's move, and countless rejections and opportunities that may or may not have been worth taking. She will talk about how to make choices and allocate resources that will lead to a growing, long-term career, instead of a disappointing flash in the pan.

Tera Lynn was so down to earth! I learned a lot from her and she renewed my dream to go for New York! It apparently does happen

My experience of the Feb., 2013, meeting was very good. As usual Richard and Lindsay did a fine job and the speaker was especially good. I learned things.

I checked the reviews on the Tap Room. I don't do "bars with smokers." I'm more the library or business with conference room type.

This is a back room used for meetings and events, not the bar itself.

Tera Lynn said she was nervous, but she came through with great information on the writing process and dealing with publishers.
The Best Take-Away, I got from her talk was to use your time to the best advantage AAANND

Absolutely! I loved what she said: that you never know which book is going to break you into the business so just keep putting them out there! It's encouraging!

Really enjoyed this meeting, and Tera Childs did a great presentation. Helps to know my baby steps toward a writing career are somewhat in line with how she started.

Tera Lynn was terrific, and she had me at spreadsheet. Beyond her charm and success, and self-deprecating humor, I hope we all took in the clear message that once she got focused, she's very, very business-like, and that includes constant and hard work. I was particularly impressed with how she stays mindful of how writing novels today and publication modes is built solidly on very shifting sands. And being flexible about one's career goals is part of a successful business model. And my favorite novel title for a long time to come is a mermaid novel with the title FORGIVE THE FINS. She has earned her success and my personal respect.

Tera Lynn Childs was very enlightening. He story about her 'accidental' beginnings as a writer and then her commitment to the profession is inspiring. Her advice about finding your voice or genre and sticking to it... not letting yourself become side tracked, is priceless. Or at least worth the $5.00 price for the evening.

    I'm writing historical fiction.
proceeding with that concept I'm going to say I'll be there, if it happens it will be the first time in 5 months. Ithink that qualifies as historical fiction.
