How long have you called yourself a writer?

Although I've been writing my entire life, I didn't start applying the label of "writer" to myself until about a year ago, when a dramatic life change shoved me in the direction of a career change. Now that I actually have a self published book of poetry, I suppose I'm entitled to call myself "WRITER"!

What changes would you like to see in your writing craft/talent with this group?

I would like to be able to produce finished pieces more quickly.

What writing rituals/habits do you have, if any?

I feel more comfortable writing longhand and then typing everything into Scribner one section at a time. Also, before I begin writing, I read about the craft for an hour. In addition, I read voraciously.

What are your goals as a writer, if any?

To finish a completed children's book with illustrations before the end of September. To finish the first draft of my novel (The White Priestess) before January. To self publish my nonfiction book (Pruning Hooks and Pipe Dreams) by the end of August. To complete six more Tales of Tern stories and complete the world building process for Tern by December. To increase my income. To publish on my blog at least once a week.

I wrote and illustrated my first book when I was only six: a princess took a spaceship to Mars and married a Martian prince. I've loved speculative fiction ever since. I write fantasy and poetry. I currently teach middle school art for CCSD.
