Brett, to give your ankle an extra hour of healing, could we make next week's Bridge Mtn. hike an 08:00 start? ;>)
Seriously, though, I do have that 03:30 to 07:30 neighborhood security drive duty, so it'd be great that extra hour if others wouldn't mind. Thanks.

    • Brett S.

Its going to be warm next sat, i prefer not to

      March 24, 2013

Ok, then I think I'll sign up for the Turtlehead Peak-from-behind hike which starts at 08:00 -- thanks though for thinking about it.

Had a great time today. I did sprain my ankle.

    March 23, 2013

    • laszlo h.

PS: I surely hope your sprained ankle heals swiftly, Brett...!

      March 24, 2013

    • Brett S.

Its not going to stop me from hiking, which is probably why it got re-sprained so easily

It is going to be windy on Saturday. Not too windy, but who know what the gusts will feel like on the mountain.

      Somebody has to summit first

I will email tonight. But it will be 7am

The "old" Hidden Bowl route involves traversing steep slabs with exposure: http://photos2.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/4/e/f/4/highres_184580212.jpeg
I've discovered that inclined slabs, above 100' drops, are not always popular.

An alternative: I will try to reconnoiter the red gully route in the next few weeks, to see if I can make that easier. That route is exposed too, but is easier to protect:

    Brett will make the call.

Jim, I was referring to the relatively short stretch right above the 1st Creek. Most trips (even Dec 2), there was some angst expressed about crossing that stretch, and I noticed in particular a section where there was a bottleneck.

      1 · March 11, 2013

    • Jim M.

I was probably too busy looking down at the slab wondering where to put my feet!

Weather should be sunny and clear this Saturday. Make sure that you bring plenty of water. It was hot when we did Potosi last Saturday. My pack for sure will be heavy.

    March 18, 2013

    • Harlan S.

The gpx file I posted (this page) before has both routes. The west Hidden Bowl route is the way we (including Jim) took last December.

I'm really looking forward to this. Every time I start driving to work I can see the top of Wilson peeking out from behind Blue Diamond Hill, and I think "I'm coming back soon!"

Darn Darn Darn... New job... have to work one saturday a month.. and this is the one... Im really bummed!!

    March 9, 2013

  • Brett S.

I have increased the size of this trip a little bit. I don't want the hike to get too large due to the amount of scrambling. If any of the organizers going want to volunteer to co-host, I can increase it.

If your wings were flapping, then you wouldn't be "gliding", eh?

      January 29, 2013

    • Brett S.

You can glide with wings. It is falling with style, taken from toy story

Here's a gpx file with the old Hidden Bowl and new Hidden Bowl (purple) routes. Do NOT open this link in your browser; instead right-click on it (ctrl-click on Mac) and download it to your desktop, then use an application like Basecamp to upload the tracks to your GPS.
    http://hwstock.org/WilsonHiddenBowl.gpx

If you have Google Earth and would like to view these , download this file: http://hwstock.org/WilsonHiddenBowl.kml Set the GE terrain detail on highest.

    1 · January 29, 2013

    • Harlan S.

The new Hidden Bowl (va Red Gully) route is tricky. The GPS doesn't track well in these canyons, so the upper part of the (drawn) red gully route is approximate.

      January 29, 2013

    • Harlan S.

note the files also contains some approximate waypoints.

Hey Brett I used my phone and the questions showed up. Just sayin'... ;-)
