3 DAY BACKPACK: Mt Williamson/Mt. Tyndall

  • Jul 20, 2013 · 7:00 AM
  • Sierra Nevada (South)

This is a killer hike to summit Mount Williamson.  The plan is to drive out Friday evening, hike up to Shepard Pass on Saturday, climb Mount Williamson on Sunday, and climb Mount Tyndall and hike out (and drive back) on Monday.

Mount Williamson is the second highest peak in California, and the most difficult peak on the LVMC Classic 50 list.

Due to the difficulty of this trip, participants will be screened for ability to complete the outing.  Also, due to Wilderness Permit requirements, there is a $5 per person charge to attend.

Total Distance: about 30 miles round trip
Total Elevation Gain: about 11,000'
Altitude: 6,300' - 14,373'
Terrain Description: Mostly trail, but some class 3 on Williamson and Tyndall
Approximate Hiking Time:  hours

To participate in this outing, you must be a current, paid member of LVMC. You can obtain a membership via this link: http://www.lvmc.org/w.... The fee is $40 per year for a family/roommates or $30 per year for an individual. Please contact your organizer if you have any questions.

To those who said Toiyabe Dome was anywhere near as difficult as Mt Williamson, I only have one thing to say to you- "Liar! Liar! Pants on fire!"

Yeah, but I never turn down the chance to assume blame!

Steep and long vs very long and at high elevation. Guess it is all in what each person's strengths and weaknesses are.

The weather is looking decent- only a slight (20%) chance of t-storms on Sunday and Monday. Temperatures look to be mild at our campsite with lows only in the low 50s, and highs around 70- http://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?lat=36.666472869784634&lon=-118.33674430847168#.Uea9oG1nDgU

Both weather.com and mountain-forecast are predicting clear skies and no precip on Saturday and Sunday- let's hope they are right.

Small world! Group of 7 of us are headed up this weekend, too. Make sure to say hi if you see us! I'll certainly look for you, too. I'll be wearing an orange or blue long sleeve shirt and a dorky white sun hat.

If anyone want to go in on Thursday afternoon with me, Check if there are permits still available and contact me. I have some business with the Bishop Paiutes earlier in the day.

Henry my permit starts on Friday, so I hope to see you Friday eve at campsite near pond just north of Shepherd Pass.I will stay at/near the LVMC group as the members are a great bunch and I look forward to socializing. I plan to summit Tyndall either Saturday or Sunday. My work schedule and wilderness permit require me to return Sunday eve. The LVMC group plans for Tyndall on Monday

Do we need to bring a bear canister?

    May 17, 2013

    • Jeff C.

not so fast.....bears in southern sierra are rather aggressive and tenacious, and have been known to wander over high passes, especially if following backpackers. yes, your chances of "bear sightseeing" are much better down lower, but I would not declare the high country safe. i'll be using a canister for sure.

      1 · May 17, 2013

    • Dan B.

I camped there last year during LVMC's Williamson climb. No bears, but I lost my food to the voles. I'll be bringing a canister.

Eric: Thank you for allowing me to join the group at camp site and for Tyndall. I really enjoy your as well as LVMC's company.
Thomas: My trip technically already is a private trip. I plan to climb Tyndall the same date as Eric's group. I enjoy your company as well, and would LOVE to ascend Tyndall with you!
Those interested in joining me in my 3 person wilderness permit (Henry The Mountain Man, James Cho, ? Thomas):
I was planning to offer the other 2 spots to LVMC member's already signed up for the as yet undated Whitney Mountaineer's Route trip led by Brett Sapowith, so they and I can condition for that climb. Or if possible, with my own family as most should be home from college then.
James Cho: April is too early for me for Tyndall. I dont want a snow climb. Nor do I want to cancel my wilderness permit and vacation dates already set for this climb.
All asking about wilderness permit availability: I have the last 3 reservable slots for Friday, Sat is also filled.

Thanks Dan for the offer on the permit, but please use it for your family or others as needed. I'll stick with Eric Kassan's permits.
      :)

While speaking with Joel yesterday, he was saying he camped at the lake above Shepherds Pass, where we camped last year. This has the advantage of being at the foot of Tyndall, making for a short ascent. Also, Tyndall will block much of the wind that came out of nowhere and nearly blew Collin and I off the pass in our tents. It also makes for a shorter trip to Williamson. The downside is about an extra mile and 300' of gain after the trip up to the pass, but it is on easy terrain.

    March 9, 2013

  • Eric K.

While I would normally encourage flexability, the primary objective of this trip is Williamson, so I would not join this trip just for Tyndall.

Anyone who wants only Tyndall should consider doing it as a long day hike. Last year Bart and Collin hauled their camping gear to the pass, and then did Tyndall on the same day. I have no doubt that with day packs they could easily have deccended as well.

    March 9, 2013

    • BMS914

We could have done it, but it would be one heck of a day. 8500' of gain/loss, with the elevation in the mix.

You can find the permit quotas for all of Inyo Natl Forest at:

    https://fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/stelprdb5143453.pdf

The easy classic route for Williamson Tyndall is the Shepard Pass trailhead. The quota there is 9 reservable and 5 walk in people per day.

To check actual availability go to:

    www.recreation.gov/unifSearchInterface.do?interface=applypermit&contractCode=NRSO&parkId=72203

The only dates fully reserved are that Fri & Sat July 19 &20

    Eric,

Can I do only Tyndall since I did Mt Williamson last year?

    March 9, 2013

  • Thomas S.

    Dan,

Seeing that we both want and only need Tyndal do you want to do it as a private trip? It would go much faster.

    March 9, 2013

  • Eric K.

Dan, you're certainly welcome to join us at the campsite and for Tyndall. It will be great to hike with you again.

    March 7, 2013

  • Dan B.

I just reserved the last 3 reservable slots for the day before (Friday July 19). With Eric's permission, I would like to join the group at the sat/sun campsite, as well as the Tyndall climb. I'm ambivalent about Williamson, having climbed it with the group last year. My permit is for Mahoghany Flat Friday night, which is the lowest and first campable site on the route, a good choice if one wants to drive to Lone Pine on Friday.

Wow! I'm impressed at the level of interest. For those interested, the comments and photos from last year's trip are here- http://www.meetup.com/LasVegasMountaineersClub/events/55476812/
