Weekend Backpack: Great Basin National Park

This is a fairly easy one night backpack to Baker Lake in Great Basin National Park.  My primary goal will be Baker Peak (my 48th of the LVMC 50 peaks), but those who wish to do only the backpack are welcome.  The proposed plan:

Saturday early (maybe Friday night): Leave Las Vegas
Saturday morning: Backpack up to Baker Lake
Saturday afternoon: Optional hike up Johnson Peak
Sunday morning: Optional hike to Baker Peak (both summits)
Sunday afternoon: Hike out and head back to Las Vegas

While not part of the official plan, some may want to add Pyramid Peak (another LVMC classic 50 peak) and it adds only 650' and half a mile to the Johnson Peak hike.

Total Distance: 12 miles round trip to the lake, 3 miles round trip for Johnson Peak, and 2 miles round trip to Baker Peak
Total Elevation Gain: 2,600' to Lake, 1,200' to Johnson Peak, and 1,900' to Baker Peak
Altitude: 8,000' - 12,305' (camp at 10,600')
Terrain Description: Trail to Baker Lake, on and off-trail to Johnson Peak (class 1-2), challenging off-trail (class 2-3) to Baker Peak
Approximate Hiking Time: 5 hours (Baker Lake), 2.5 hours (Johnson Peak), 4 hours (Baker Peak)

Please remember to answer the questions after RSVPing. If you are using a phone, the questions will not appear. Therefore, please check back again to answer the questions.

To participate in this outing, you must be a current, paid member of LVMC. You can obtain a membership via this link: http://www.lvmc.org/w.... The fee is $40 per year for a family/roommates or $30 per year for an individual. Please contact your organizer if you have any questions.

Hello, is there any room for me to jump in with anyone on the Saturday departure? I can drive up there but would prefer not to. I have $$ for gas and can hold a decent conversation.... :)

FYI, I'll be bringing a camp-sized water filter and a Jetboil. If anyone wants to use them at camp (and not carry their own), that's fine by me.

Hello, I assume that Baker lake is a real lake and not a dry one? I guess what I am trying to ask is are there water sources on this hike and at the campsite? Thank you - sounds fun!

Baker lake is a real lake (water included).

I'd be wanting both Baker and Pyramid on this trip. Also, I may be staying longer, as I'll be off from work, so I may want to climb some of the other LVMC peaks in the area as well.

I think the way to do the combo is the way you did- starting at the 10,000 trailhead. Starting from a Baker Lake backpack would require not only gettiing a ride, but getting someone else to carry the camping gear out, or worse, hauling it over all the peaks.

Whatever you do...don't try the traverse from Pyramid to Baker unless you're a fan of sidehilling over loose refrigerator-sized talus :-)

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
