Total Elevation Gain: 5500'
Altitude: 4926' - 7287'
Terrain Description: Off-trail, class 2
Approximate Hiking Time: 10-12 hours
This is an outing to summit two peaks in Death Valley. Towne Benchmark has over 2000' of prominence; Panamint Butte is on the Sierra Club DPS (Desert Peak Section) list. This will be a strenuous day hike! We will start from Towne Pass (4926') along highway 190, so any vehicle will do.
We will climb the slope directly north of the pass, then follow a ridge to Towne BM (7287'), then drop down and follow a ridge to Panamint Butte (6584'). The ridge walk will be long and will have many ups and downs, but the terrain is not supposed to be overly difficult, although there is supposed to be plentiful loose talus. Then we will retrace our steps back up over Towne BM, and back to the vehicles. There is also a plane crash that we may explore if we have the time/energy.
Expect a full day (dawn to dusk+) of hiking. Bring a headlamp! I plan to drive there very early Saturday morning. It is about a 2.5 hour drive there, so to start hiking by 6, I would be leaving around 3:30 am! Camping in Death Valley is an option for those who don't like the super early drive. We will coordinate as the date approaches.
