DAY HIKE: Towne Benchmark & Panamint Butte

  • November 16, 2013 · 6:00 AM

Total Distance: 16 miles
Total Elevation Gain: 5500'
Altitude: 4926' - 7287'
Terrain Description: Off-trail, class 2
Approximate Hiking Time: 10-12 hours

This is an outing to summit two peaks in Death Valley. Towne Benchmark has over 2000' of prominence; Panamint Butte is on the Sierra Club DPS (Desert Peak Section) list. This will be a strenuous day hike!  We will start from Towne Pass (4926') along highway 190, so any vehicle will do.

We will climb the slope directly north of the pass, then follow a ridge to Towne BM (7287'), then drop down and follow a ridge to Panamint Butte (6584'). The ridge walk will be long and will have many ups and downs, but the terrain is not supposed to be overly difficult, although there is supposed to be plentiful loose talus. Then we will retrace our steps back up over Towne BM, and back to the vehicles. There is also a plane crash that we may explore if we have the time/energy.

Expect a full day (dawn to dusk+) of hiking. Bring a headlamp! I plan to drive there very early Saturday morning. It is about a 2.5 hour drive there, so to start hiking by 6, I would be leaving around 3:30 am! Camping in Death Valley is an option for those who don't like the super early drive. We will coordinate as the date approaches.

Please remember to answer the questions after RSVPing. If you are using a phone, the questions will not appear. Therefore, please check back again to answer the questions.

To participate in this outing, you must be a current, paid member of LVMC. You can obtain a membership via this link: http://www.lvmc.org/w.... The fee is $40 per year for a family/roommates or $30 per year for an individual. Please contact your organizer if you have any questions.

Sorry that this has taken so long to upload these pictures. My laptop died. I now need a new computer.

I read about plane crash. It happened quite awhile ago. Engine went bad. I think in the 50s. The entire crew bailed out and the plane continued to fly on its own for another 20 miles.

    Can Pippers come?

i suspect jim meant sturdy shoes. i hope.

Sturdy shoes. And better study the route. You wouldn't want Pippers to get lost. The uncle should/could contribute to the cost of Puss in Boots.

I am not sure of what I am doing as of right now. There are two things going on this day and I am not sure which one I want to do.

Folks, I have to drop out. I'm having another surgery next week and will probably still be on drugs and weak when this trip comes about.

Sorry to hear that...hope all goes well with the surgery.

Pippers is camping with mama (AKA: me)!!!!! She is a mountaineering kitty and will be the first ever LVMC mascot. Joel who do I submit this proposal too on the board (the kitten mascot)? I even found her little kitty eskimo coat thingys for her mountaineering outings in the snow. A red one for Christmas time (though she is more likely to celebrate 8 days of gifts than just 1) and a tan one for her everyday hikes. Pipperrrrrrssssssss!

Thanks for getting back to me, Joel. I have done some hikes with the 52 Peak Club, including Griffith Peak and Mummy Mtn. I am pretty new to hiking, and I must admit to having struggled on these long hikes. (And I was wearing shoes.) According to the Hiking Las Vegas club I would probably be considered a "moderate" pace hiker, although at times I've felt slow. I think I will pass on this hike so as to not take the chance of holding up the group. I look forward to joining you on future hikes.

Brent, probably a wise choice. I look forward to seeing you on a future trip.

This sounds like a great trip. I do have a couple of questions. First, would I be able to do the hike barefoot? (kidding!) Actually, I need to find out the pace of this adventure. I'm not the fastest hiker in the world.

    September 4, 2013

    • Joel B.

Brent, due to the length of the hike, we will have to keep a pretty good pace to finish by dark. Since I haven't hiked with you, what is the longest/hardest hike you have done, and how long did it take you? And you probably can't go barefoot for this one. :)
