Total Distance: ~12 to 14 miles round trip
Total Elevation Gain: ~4,500 to 5,000'
Altitude: 2,400' - 7,000'
Terrain Description: off-trail, class 3 scrambling
Approximate Hiking Time: about 10 hours
This is the hard way to the top of Gass Peak. Due to the gun range, we have to hike a longer distance through the desert to get to where people used to be able to drive adding 2.5 miles each way and 1,000 feet elevation gain. There are a few dry waterfalls scramble around and a lot of very steep terrain including scree. Some parts will be 30 - 40% grade. This hike will be challenging and rewarding to say I actually did it from the direction everyone sees in the valley. You definitely need to be is very good shape for this tough hike. I'm starting early to make sure we get back before dark so bring a headlamp just in case. At least, hiking to the car will be easy for the last part of the hike with little light. Again, this hike will be a ball-buster and very tough.
I've already checked with the gun range determining we are good parking outside the range and hiking out of sight of the gun range on the way to the peak.
