DAY HIKE: Mitchell Pt. & Edgar Peak

  • March 2, 2014 · 5:30 AM

Total Distance: 15 miles
Total Elevation Gain: 5000'
Altitude: 3400' - 7162'
Terrain Description: Off-trail, class 2-3
Approximate Hiking Time: 11-14 hours

This is a day hike to summit two peaks in southeast CA on the Mojave National Preserve. Both peaks are the the Sierra Club DPS (Desert Peak Section) list, and Edgar has over 2000' feet of prominence. This will be a long day! These peaks are located about 2 miles apart. I have switched the order of peaks because there are a few of you that want to do Mitchell only. Those that wish to do that can just retrace their tracks down Mitchell, but for the others (the really crazy), we will make a loop hike out of it, following a jagged ridgeline over to Edgar, then descending down a canyon to finally rejoin our ascent route. In the interest of full disclosure, the steep, loose terrain and plentiful nasty desert plants will make this a difficult day! Most likely, you WILL have some cactus encounters. If you are not somewhat masochistic, you probably shouldn't sign up! :)

It will be about a 2.5-3 hour drive to the trailhead. There will be  some driving on rough roads, so we will need decent-clearance, but not not necessarily 4WD vehicles.

Expect a full day (dawn to dusk) of hiking. We will be on a firm schedule so we can hopefully fit both peaks in before dusk. I plan to drive there very early Sunday morning. I would like to start hiking by no later than 6 am, so I will be leaving around 3 am! Camping at the trailhead is an option for those who don't like the super early drive. We will coordinate as the date approaches.

Also, since we will be pushing daylight hours, bring a headlamp, just in case. After the hike, we will drive home, probably stopping for dinner on the way.

Please remember to answer the questions after RSVPing. If you are using a phone, the questions will not appear. Therefore, please check back again to answer the questions.

To participate in this outing, you must be a current, paid member of LVMC. You can obtain a membership via this link: http://www.lvmc.org/w.... The fee is $40 per year for a family/roommates or $30 per year for an individual. Please contact your organizer if you have any questions.

Glad to hear the Edgar peak folks made it back! I was worried whether you encountered any mishaps.

It was rugged in a few places, but only a couple sections of fairly easy class 3 up cliff bands.

An excellent day in the mountains...two tough summits with a great, tough group. Cactus encounters were held to single digits. :)

Looks like a good Sunday! (Provided the roads are still there!)

Hey, Folks! I would like to camp at the trailhead Saturday night but it sounds as if it can only be accessed with high clearance. If that is the case, can someone give me a lift from my car Saturday night or Sunday morning to the trailhead? It looks like there is a decent road about a mile from where Joel intends to begin. I will be hiking only Mitchell, so I will be hiking out fairly early as well.

Note I officially dropped off this trip's list because of my interest only in Edgar, but I hope to see you all at least at the trailhead where I will be spending Saturday night. Providence Mtn HP is still my goal for Monday, Laura. I was planning to go on to AZ for 3 county HP's the following 5 days but 3 days of snow is predicted on Mt Baldy there so I have canned that trip and will stay in SE California. I'm looking at possibly 3 wilderness area HP's around Tecopa (Ibex, Noon, and Saddle Peak if any one is interested. Note weather prediction in next message.

Hi Dan, Terrific then for Providence Mtns HP. I would love to tag along. I will be out at the TH for M/E as well on Saturday night and drive a silver Expedition. For Tuesday, I made plans to do Sheephole Mtns HP and some Joshua Tree stuff then have to head home.

I'm likely to stay out in the area Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday if anyone is interested in picking up a few more peaks.

I can't go on Saturday as I have some family obligations but planning to camp at the trailhead Saturday night. Other peaks could be old dad, clipper, sheephole, chuckwalla etc. but those are just plans I came up with if I'm solo. I'm up for any peaks that I haven't done.

      February 21, 2014

    • Jodie

I just did Sheephole and Chuckie. But, see you at Mitchell/Edgar.

      February 21, 2014

  • Dan B.

I actually have no interest in the DPS list, and complete interest in the Calif P2K list, where I have summited 140 of the 164. Since this trip has now reversed the order of the peaks in order to give summiting priority to Mitchell, I think I will drop out so I can prioritize Edgar. I hope to see you as I revert back to the original plan, at least at the trailhead and somewhere en route.
Laura I plan to climb the Providence Mtns Highpoint this trip as well. Nearby and another CAP2K, but not a DPS peak

I would be up for doing this on Monday.

Note the 2013 Sierra Club trip went to Edgar via Gilroy Canyon as well. Read the article in the attached link for Desert Sage. These folks are pretty conservative when it comes to trespassing. http://angeles.sierraclub.org/dps/newsletterbackissues/2013/Sage345.pdf

    February 4, 2014

    • Harlan S.

DPS guides are now mainly "updated" through "The Desert Sage." The (road) access instructions are often woefully outdated; and some of the hiking trails were subsequently altered by fires and landslides.

Collin, Kyle and I followed Jim's descent track (up and down) a few weeks ago. It went fairly smoothly. We did cut some off on the way down. Also, we varied the route near the summit trading some Class 3 climbing for steep, very loose Class 2. I liked the climbing better.

Hopefully the Providence Mtns State Rec Area will reopen by March 2. otherwise it adds 2 miles to the hike each way. The exact date for the reopening has not fully been set yet:
The park has been closed since 2011 due to major infrastructure issues. The Department is in the process of repairing these crucial issues to get the park re open to the public.

Most buildings in the park have been repaired. The Cavern has been inspected. The Department is in the process of installing a new well and replacing the existing generators (since the park is operated solely on generator use).
If all goes well, it is anticipated that the park will be re -opened to the public in
Spring 2014. We appreciate your patience and cooperation during this time.

Please check the website periodically for any updated information. Thank you for supporting this gem of the California State Park System.

My goal is to not only get both of these that weekend but to finish without scarring up my body like I did with the Utah Bastard Bushes. Hopefully my current cuts, bruises, scabs, etc. will be healed by March 1st in time for a new (hopefully not) body destroying by nature. Sheephole boulders and rocks and catclaw got me last weekend.

Just don't sit down without looking. And if you do, be prepared to return to the car in your underwear (as I did).

Also the group should be aware that there is some risk of arrest for tresspass if the park hasnt reopened by March 2:
It may be a very long time before the public can enjoy the caves again, or the small but impossibly scenic campground nearby. On February 5, San Bernardino sheriff's deputies arrested Christopher Alvarado, 48, of Azusa and Trisha Sutton, 36, of Covina at a desert campsite near the SRA after responding to a call that trespassers were on the SRA grounds.

Doubt I will be able to do this hike. Had the knee surgery 1/28/14. Chrondoplasty is the tie up. Brace for 6 weeks. PT indicated, though, my progress is 1 week ahead of schedule. Shoot, 3 weeks after my shoulder surgery I climbed the SPS peak Mt. Stanford as a day hike. Won't happen here, with the knee surgery.

An ambitious day! Fortunately, I've already climbed both of them! Good luck. Mitchell is a fierce one.

Wow, looks like area N of Winding Stair would be a nice primitive camp. In a primitive camp, you have to use animal furs for your sleeping bag, and have to rub sticks together to make fires. Kyle would like that.

Just had athroscopic knee surgery today. Torn meniscuses. Will sign up if and when I am able to.
