2-DAY TRIP: Central Nevada

  • April 18, 2014 · 7:00 PM

This is a weekend trip to summit some prominent peaks in central Nevada-
Reveille Peak - 8,812' elevation, 2678' prominence
Rawhide Mountain - 9,169' elevation, 2439' prominence
Kawich Peak - 9,401' elevation, 3081' prominence

Kawich Peak is also on the Great Basin Peaks List, and has almost 40 miles of isolation (is the tallest peak for 39.4 miles in any direction).

The plan is to drive towards the trailhead for Reveille on Friday evening, climb Reveille on Saturday morning, then drive to Rawhide Mountain, and hike that.  Depending on time, we'll either camp there or drive to the trailhead for Kawich and camp there.  On Sunday we'll hike Kawich and then head back to Las Vegas.

Total Distance:  Reveille: 2.4, Rawhide: 2.7, Kawich: 4.7 (miles round trip)
Total Elevation Gain: Reveille: 1,800', Rawhide: 1,500', Kawich: 2,300'
Altitude: 6,800' - 9,401'
Terrain Description: Probably a mix of class 1-2, some bushwhacking on Kawich
Approximate Hiking Time: Reveille: 4, Rawhide: 3, Kawich: 6 (hours)

    Eric,
I never experienced that much heavy bushwhacking before, thank you for bring machete to made passage way that the only way we can climb up relatively easily. Also thank you for the Taxi service.

    Larry,
It was nice to hike with you again. I didn't know that the Kawich Peak was my #22 of the Great Basin Peaks List, I have checked the Peakbagger.com.

    Eric and Larry,
Added my photos on my website, please check it out: http://www.kayplaza.com/hike.php

I hope you will heal from tons of scratches and cuts by bushwhacking soon.

P.S. With work and other stuff, it will likely be a few days before I go through my GPS tracks and post trip reports.

I twisted my ankle over three weeks ago, getting better but still not fully recovered yet. Seems to this is easy and short hike, I think I can make it. Just in case, if I can't make it, I'll turn back and wait you.
