DAY HIKE: White Mountain Peak (LVMC 50)

  • Jul 19, 2014 · 5:00 AM

Total Distance: 14 miles round trip
Total Elevation Gain: 3,500'
Altitude: 11,700' - 14,246'
Terrain Description: Class 1, dirt road
Approximate Hiking Time: 6-8 hours

White Mountain is a California 14er, but is relatively easy. The hike follows a road all the way to the summit. While this hike is straight-forward, the altitude affects people differently, especially if you have not been to this elevation before. We will car camp Friday night either at Grandview campground at 8500' or at the trailhead at 11,700', then do the hike Saturday morning. The drive to the trailhead is a long drive on a rocky road. We will drive home Saturday night after the hike.

** High-clearance vehicle is recommended to get to the trailhead **

White Mountain Peak is one of LVMC's Classic 50 Peaks and it is also on the Sierra Clubs DPS list.

Please remember to answer the questions after RSVPing. If you are using a phone, the questions will not appear. Therefore, please check back again to answer the questions.

To participate in this outing, you must be a current, paid member of LVMC. You can obtain a membership via this link:http://www.lvmc.org/w.... The fee is $40 per year for a family/roommates or $30 per year for an individual. Please contact your organizer if you have any questions.

    Thanks Brett!
It WAS good high altitude prep for Dennis and I. The following day we summited 4 of Calif's 40 highest non-Sierra Nevada peaks. We also made it half way up a fifth peak before running back down amidst hail and lightening flashes. Then Mon-today we successfully summited Mt Humphreys, with a little class 5.3 en route. Thanks again!

I need to acclimatize. See you at the trailhead on Saturday.

Dan, which campground are you stating at?

      July 16, 2014

    • Dan B.

I will sleep tomorrow night at the gate at the accessible end of the road

Since the weather is still predicting thunderstorms, I moved the start time to 5am.

I was looking at the route to White Mt trailhead. The fastest route is 149 miles past Beatty. The last 20 are going to be on dirt road. From memory, there is not a gas station. The town Big Pine is about 13 miles past the turnoff for White Mountain. I recommend that we stop there either on the way their, back, or both. Should not add that much time, because it is 13 miles of highway.

Amber & I will be leaving earlier. We have to stop in Lone Pine earlier in the day on Friday, so we're going that way anyways. We'll see you guys at the trailhead.

      Thanks Kevin. See you then.

No reason to camp, lol. Cook some smores and start moving.

I heard that some of you are heading to Boundary/Montgomery on Sunday. I am heading back to LV on Saturday and want to make sure that I have enough vehicles.

Sent out meetup info. Let me know if you didn't get. Dan, we will see you at the Trailhead. I am looking at camping by the gate, not at the lower Grandview campground.

Hello, I've had a change of plans and won't be attending next weekend. Have fun!

    July 13, 2014

So, I am envisioning a large backpack with tent/sleeping bag,etc...as well as a lighter daypack to use for the hike.
    Am I envisioning that correctly?
Is there a water source at the trailhead?
Are there any opportunities to hitch a ride from LV on the Friday (I'm good for my share of gas $)?
    Thanks.

    • Brett S.

We are car camping, not backpacking. I don't believe there are any water sources. We are stopping by a few cities on the way to the trailhead. The plan was for people to carpool.

It's been a few years since I last summited White Mtn, but at that time there was a problem with marmots gnawing on engine compartment hoses and wires. Luckily I found a spare roll of chicken wire there and wrapped my car as most others in the parking area had done.
I saw similar problems and actions in Seq NP Mineral King area this year where the rangers said many cares were disabled early in the season when the marmots are salt deprived.
I suggest drivers consider a large tarp (I saw many at Mineral King). I personally am bringing a spray bottle of coyote urine which you can find in the garden section of large building supply stores, and even at Walmart.com

I also need to go to White Mtn to go to the wilderness area HP which is about a hundred yds SW of the summit shack. I'm 5th on the front runner list at peakbagger.com with 74 Calif Wilderness Area HP's to date.

Guess we will not miss you

I will be getting off of work at 1pm on Fri, the 18th. I plan on leaving between 3-6pm to drive out there. I wanted to coordinate with times so that we can carpool. Let me know what works for you. Thanks.

    June 22, 2014

    • Amber C.

      Works for me!

      June 24, 2014

    • Phil L

That should work for me as well. Like Kay, I would much rather get to the site while we still have some daylight.

      June 24, 2014

  • Phil L

Hello! What time are you planning on heading out of LV on the Friday (tentatively of course)?

    May 11, 2014

    • Brett S.

I am getting off work around 1pm that Friday, so probably between 3-6pm. Since people get off work at different times, I will coordinate to see what time works best. Otherwise people can go separately and meet us at the Trailhead

      May 12, 2014

    • Phil L

Thanks Brett - I likely will be able to sneak out early that day as well. Looking forward to it!

If I don't end up doing a new peak on this day, Brett, I may join you to get the acclimation in. I have done this twice already.
