This is a trip to summit of a couple of prominent peaks just south of Winnemucca.
Tobin Peak - elevation:9,775 ft, prominence:4,831 ft, and on the Nevada Peaks Club list
Sonoma Peak - elevation: 9,396 ft, prominence: 3,896 ft
Both peaks also have over 30 miles of isolation (are the tallest peaks for over 30 miles in any direction).
The plan is to leave Friday after work, drive partway up and camp. On Saturday we will finish the drive, and hike up Sonoma Peak. After which, we will enjoy a good BBQ meal at a restaurant in Winnemucca, before heading to a local hot springs area to relax and camp. On Sunday morning, we will hike Tobin Peak before returning to Las Vegas (at a reasonable hour).
Total Distance: 5 miles round trip (Saturday) and 3 miles (Sunday)
Total Elevation Gain: 2,700' (Saturday) and 1,400' (Sunday)
Altitude: 6,700' - 9,775'
Terrain Description: Probably all off-trail, but expected decent class 1-2 terrain
Approximate Hiking Time: 6 hours (Saturday) and 3 hours (Sunday)
Please note this hike is listed as exploratory- this means I have not hiked in the area much less to these summits, so what we may find may differ from my expectations.
