2-DAY trip: Hole-in-the-Mountain Peak + celebration

  • Jul 26, 2014 · 7:00 AM

This is a trip to summit Hole-in-the-mountain Peak, but we will also hike nearby Spruce Mountain.  The plan is to leave early Saturday, drive up (about 5.5 hours) and hike Spruce Mountain.  Spruce Mountain has a road to the summit, so we should be able to choose the amount of hike we want.  After that we will drive to the trailhead for Hole-in-the-mountain Peak and get an early start. On Sunday, we will climb Hole-in-the-mountain Peak, and then return to Las Vegas.  I expect we will be back in town by 8pm Sunday night.

Hole-in-the-mountain Peak will be a celebration peak for me, completing the Nevada peaks with 4,000 or more feet of prominence.  While not an "official" list, given it has 24 geographically diverse peaks, I'm going to celebrate it anyway!

Please note that this is exploratory- I have not climbed in the area, much less to these summits before, so all information is based on research.

Total Distance: 3 miles round trip Saturday, 4.5 miles Sunday
Total Elevation Gain: 1,600' Saturday, 3,200' Sunday
Altitude: 8,200' - 11,306'
Terrain Description: Class 1 Saturday, Class 1-2 Sunday
Approximate Hiking Time: 3 hours Saturday, 7 hours Sunday

Please remember to answer the questions after RSVPing. If you are using a phone, the questions will not appear. Therefore, please check back again to answer the questions.

To participate in this outing, you must be a current, paid member of LVMC. You can obtain a membership via this link: The fee is $40 per year for a family/roommates or $30 per year for an individual. Please contact your organizer if you have any questions.

Thank-you, Eric, for a fantastic trip, beautiful mountains, flower meadows, the worst forest service "road" ever and a great team.

Congratulations for completion of the Nevada peaks with 4K or more feet of prominence. How many years to complete it?

I never really focused on it (or any one list), but it will be about 5 years.

Eric--This sounds like a great trip and I need Hole-in-the-mountain, but I've got an FNW Board meeting next weekend. I'll look forward to your trip report.
