Las Vegas Mountaineers Club

Chad Hoing is an Interpretive Park Ranger from Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area. After his enlistment with the US Air Force, he graduated from the University of Colorado Denver with a degree in anthropology. He has worked at various National Park sites and has been working at Red Rock Canyon NCA since September leading guided hikes and other interpretive programing. Chad enjoys spending time mountain biking local trails, hiking with his wife, and being on the water any chance he gets.

His presentation will be a brief background of Red Rock and its status as a Conservation Area, and how as an interpretive Park Ranger his job can facilitate people's connection to the outdoors and their Public Lands.

LVMC in-person presentations are held in the community meeting room at REI in Boca Park at 7 pm the 4th Wednesday of each month.

The club will provide snacks and water.

Moapa Peak is a great peak, one of my local favorites! It is on the LVMC 50 Classic Peak List, and features some fun class 3 along the steep ridgeline, and a knife-edge ridge to the summit for the last quarter mile or so. This is not a good trip for you if you are afraid of heights!

Moapa is located about an hour east of Las Vegas, just north of I-15, very eye-catching as you drive by toward Mesquite. The trailhead is reached by about 8 miles of dirt road. High-clearance vehicles needed.

This is a trip to summit Oxford Peak, a peak with over 4,000' of prominence, and the 10th most prominent peak in Idaho. We'll leave Friday evening and make our way well into Utah. On Saturday, we'll take some time out of the drive to hike Indian Peaks, a prominent peak in north-central Utah, for what should be a moderate hike. We'll then continue the drive up north to stay somewhere near Oxford Peak. On Sunday, we'll climb Oxford Peak, and then head over toward Logan (Utah), and stay in that area. Monday morning, we'll get an early start, hike Logan Peak (a road hike), then head back to Las Vegas.

Due to the long miles and limited time, I'm planning on staying in hotels all three nights. Those driving separately are welcome to try to find places nearby to camp.

All of these peaks/areas are new to me, so this trip is exploratory.

This is trip to climb Mt. Rainier taking the Emmons route,

The plan is to hike up to base camp on a Friday and set up camp. Then on Saturday we will set off for the summit leaving camp around midnight. Hopefully, we will summit by sunrise and be back at camp by noon. It takes an average of 7 hours to summit. There is an option of staying another night in camp or hike down to trailhead after summit depending on weather.

Climbing Mt. Rainier is difficult which requires commitment, technical skills, acclimatization and excellent physical condition. Months before the climb, we will do a lot of training as a team especially above 11,000 feet. Our training will consist of many long hikes especially with heavy packs. We’ll refresh monthly roped glacier travel, self-arrest with an ice ax, and crevasse rescue systems. I want to emphasize that the bulk of the physical conditioning is the responsibility of the individual. Since we will be traveling as a roped team for much of the trip, we can go only as fast as the slowest person. If you cannot keep up as the trip approaches, you may be dropped from the trip. This will allow others to join. These decisions are solely at the discretion of the coordinator. If you can’t commit to most of our training hikes then this is not for you.

Please be informed that this is an expensive trip especially with the gear and logistics.

Climbing Mt. Rainier requires a Climbing fee of $52 for adults 26 and over. We also need a climbing permit for the group. Early access to the lottery will be on February 21, 2023. If we don’t get a permit, this trip CANCELS.

There is room for 6 people on this trip, I will only get people in for those who are committed, has experience or had a glacier travel class/crevasse rescue class. Get on the waiting list and attend training. as people may drop out before next July. People who signed up and not attending training will be dropped off.

The options getting there will be to drive (about 17 hours), or flying up and renting a car to meet at the trailhead.

We will have meetings as well in between trainings so we can discuss logistics and answer questions

I also emphasize that this is not a guided trip, I am not a professional guide. We will be planning together and train together. You will be responsible for yourself and your safety.
