July Book Club - The Bridge by Iain Banks

Nick will host our next book as a salute to Mr Banks, a unanimous choice by the group.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Bridge_(novel)

A darkly brilliant novel of self-discovery the cutting edge of experimental fiction. It leads from nowhere to nowhere, the mysterious world-spanning structure on which everyone seems to live. Rescued from the sea, devoid of personality or memory, all John Orr knows is the Bridge, his persistent dreams of war, and his desire for Chief Engineer Arrol's provocative daughter, Abberlaine.

Sorry not to make it - I couldn't bring myself to spend the evening indoors on such a nice evening after being at work all day (but I did read the book!)

I ordered and bought my copy from waterstones - met a guy in there who was buying another book by the same author - and he said he really hated the Bridge! Anyway, I've started it....seems pretty good to me...to each his own!

Ruth, you beat me to it with the interview. I guess you read that he considered the Bridge to be his best. I agree. Here's the Guardian link.
