Hey Donald, Scala is a 'functional' programming language that runs on the JVM (Java Virtual Machine). It actually is both functional and 'object oriented.' One of the benefits of functional language is that it tends to work with 'immutable' data types, which, since there's less need to keep track of data 'state', it lends itself well to handling 'concurrency' issues in today's distributed, parallel, clustered, and multi-cored environments. That's my take... cheers.
