Stop Trying to Find Customers - Get Them to Find You!

Special one-night only event: join us for this in-depth seminar on customer development!

The #1 challenge entrepreneurs have being Lean Startups?  Nope, it isn’t following the right process, document assumptions or testing them.  The #1 challenge is FINDING enough customers and winning their trust to get insights. The real challenge entrepreneurs have with Customer Development is FINDING customers TO develop them.

Former DCLSC meetup co-organizer and founder Kevin Dewalt (former DC, now Beijing, China) has been helping entrepreneurs worldwide for the past 5 years apply Lean Startup techniques to more efficiently discover opportunities.

For the past year he has been teaching entrepreneurs in places like Shanghai, Beijing, Singapore, Manila and Omaha to do Helpful Marketing - a strategy for getting customers by proving you help them solve problems.

In this Helpful Marketing training he will teach you:

—How you can copy the secrets of how fast-growing startups are actually working (the stuff you don’t read in Techcrunch)

—How to create a Target Persona that forms the foundation of your Helpful Marketing efforts.

—How to write content your customers WANT to read.—How to get your customers to find it.

—How you can leverage this trust for insight & sales.

Lean Startup - and really all of business - is a lot easier when customers love you and are searching for you.

6:30 pm - Networking

7:00 pm - Customer Development Seminar

RSVP now to get your spot!

PSSST!! Kevin is finishing a book called Beginning Customer Development based on his most popular blog posts.  You can get a FREE copy for the first 48 hours after the launch - just reserve a copy at

If you haven’t met Kevin, he is one of the most well-known Lean Startup evangelists in the world according to Eric Ries. He has helped entrepreneurs apply these principles from small Islands in the Philippines to Stanford’s campus.

    Hey all,

I had a chance to exchange emails with a number of you after this meetup - thanks for that. Most of your questions were around more specific things you could do, specific business problems to solve by being helpful. As I help more entrepreneurs implement these strategies and learn from them I'm starting to see patterns emerge on what people are doing.

The 4 pattens are being helpful to build reputation, get customer problem insight, close sales, and create evangelists.

    I cover them in

In coming weeks I'll have case studies on them (I won't post them here). Hope Memorial Day was good to everyone.

My girlfriend and I are hosting a tent for a local charity at the VA Gold Cup this weekend. The weather is turning and it looks like Saturday will be a great day. I would love to have a chance for some social time with some of the "Circle"....Furthermore, I have established a discount code for our group - "Lean2014", which provides a great discount. The code will be good until ticket sales are shut down. Any questions, don't hesitate to reach out to me.

    Great insights and enthusiasm. Here is a story that came out this morn on HBR Blog that emphasizes a main message that Kevin shared.;
    (Wow, what a link).
Thanks for a great evening, Kevin and Rebecca.

All, so sorry to miss! Ironically, a potential new client found us (!) and I had to take a call from out West. Is there any way I can get copies of the presentations? Is there a twitter #hashtag or someone who took notes? Thanks

Absolutely spectacular meetup. I learned that the paradigm for struggling business is reactive--"We wait for the customer to come to us." The companies that grow have the attitude of "What can I do for you?" They actively know their customers and proactively solve their problems. Once they trust you, they will tell you their true problems and then your products get traction.

Thanks Kendel - I got your email, will respond later today.

Here are some answers to the top questions you asked me last night. many of you pointed out the workshop link was broken. Here is the correct one:

How to get people to find your first blog post:

    Trust scales:

    Target personas & writing:

    Gary Vaynerchuk:

    Getting help from me:

Winning customer trust isn't easy - nothing worth doing in business (or life) is. But stay focused on them ... their needs ... their problems and I promise you'll reap the rewards. When you are in doubt or frustrated ... just ... keep ... going ...

    You will get there.

On my way ... won't let a little rain stand in the way of helping you find more customers! BTW my book is still available if you didn't get a copy.

It is so frustrating that the number of attendees keeps changing (first 126, then 129, now 128) but the spots are all stil taken. I've gotten notices about spots opening up, but have been on phone calls and in a 3-hour meeting. Clearly, it's a topic that interests a lot of people. To those of you who've updated your RSVPs because you can't make it, thank you. Please, if you know you can't go, free up a spot for someone else.

Usually there are no shows. Esp on a rainy evening such as today. If you are in DC them I will suggest that you pop in. You never know :)

Thank you. Luckily I had my phone in my hand at the right time, and was able to secure a spot. Thank you for your help! :)

It looks like there will be one empty seat. I registered but can't attend now. Sorry! I was looking forward to it.

Unfortunately, I won't be able to make it as I am out of town. Will this meetup be recorded?

And it fills so quickly... :-) Sorry, I didn't get an open spot to attend it this time. Hopefully, you will repeat it in DC in the near future...
