Jan 8 - Learn Tai Chi for 2014

Happy New Year!

Start the New Year on a good footing by joining us and learning Tai Chi in 2014.  Tai Chi is a great low impact method of improving your balance, health and overall well being. This is your opportunity to try a practice that you can cultivate throughout a lifetime and can do in virtually any state of health.
The sessions start with traditional Qigong (vitality exercises) to warmup and increase relaxation.  We then move into building a basic tai chi form, or set series of movements. The meetup sessions emphasize getting the right feel for the fundamentals in an environment that is relaxing, fun and invigorating.  You can build on these fundamentals through our continuing group practice or take them with you to other classes.
Sessions are open to all - We try to gear the sessions for those who are just starting, but also help the more experienced cultivate their practice.  This is also a great place for serious students who may be between classes and want to work with a group and learn some different practices.
Session start at 6:15, but get there around 6:00 to meet other people and ask questions.

Sessions are free - Our space is rented through donations collected at the end of the session - $3-$5 is the suggested amount.  Hope to see you there!

Lee, in the past you offered to the more seasoned attendees some suggestions to help us continue to progress while you taught the basics to the new attendees. If you could continue to expand upon that, I would greatly appreciate it. Also, I wonder if maybe during the second half of the session, after the warm up, those more seasoned could meet in the hallway to practice everything we've learned so far? Just a couple ideas....

Thanks Jean - I agree and it would be great to figure this out as a group: Its a lot of fun for me to work with new folks but we dont want people to get stuck - How about we start a discussion thread for options? I will call it "Going forward: How can progress as a group?"

Sorry about that Nelma! Hopefully next week the roads will be friendlier!

Just wanted to thank everyone for coming out last night and thank the folks who couldnt make it for letting us know they were ok !
Have to say everyone was really great and it was a pleasure to be your guide. I look forward to getting to know everyone better...
I also want to thank everyone for pitching into the donation bowl - We collected $100 ! This is enough to rent the room for 4 weeks - another evening like that and we will have enough of a cushion to lower the suggested donation level and possibly offer bonus sessions, like we did in the park over the summer, for those who cant make Wednesdays. It gives the group a lot more options. Please feel free to give feedback here or hit the group reviews section to let us know what you think of the group. Again, a pleasure to see all of you and I hope we see you all over the next few weeks!

Accident backup at 590 split! I won't be coming it tonight. I was stuck in traffic for 20 min. It'll have to be next week.

Glad you were not in the accident! No problem - you can mix right in next week - thanks for letting me know!

sorry, tried to change RSVP from phone and couldn't. Got blocked in by a neighbor who likes to leave her car running while she runs inside. Once in awhile she manages to do it just as I need to go somewhere, and that happened tonight. Didn't get out till after 6pm- so sorry.

Former sword form Tai chi practitioner looking to return after bouts with competitive meditation, free-style and Tsaoluo-Coptic styles at brown belt and above.
I will attend as I can, as schedule allows, to practice this gentle flow of elegant transitions executed with choreographed military precision. Organizer Lee has been gracious.
    谢谢。

Fun. Unfortunately a business conflict makes my attendance unlikely this evening.

FYI- I still plan to attend, however I have to work last minute. A client got a studio session together; the plan is to be done well before this event, so I should have enough time to get there. However, I will be unable to check phone/computer until we're done, so if I'm not there, you'll know that work ran late.

      Thanks Cassandra - Good luck!

I had a question from Cathy, but I cant respond to her due to her email settings. So I will respond here - Sorry Cathy!
    Q. "Do I need to bring anything to class? "
    A. Not really. I suggest warm socks or a pair of soft soled shoes for practice. You definitely want to take any snowy boots off so we don't mess up the carpeted space. Tight clothes may restrict movement such as a lunge, but it hasn't been much of an issue. I usually have to come straight from work so I usually don't have time to change .... Oh, and I suggest $3-$5 to contribute to room rental if it is not a hardship.

Wow - looks like a big turnout this week if the weather doesnt get too bad. Welcome to all the first timers and all the folks coming back! Maybe I should break out the name tags again? Try to get there early - like around 6, so we can get everyone organized and we can start serious stuff around 6:15. If you get in later its not a problem - we will make room for you at the back. The session runs until a little after 7 . There is a meditation group in the room at 7:30 so we have to be out so they can set up . There are 2 parking lots at the institute , but only 1 main entrance - it is the one in the lower parking lot (south , furthest from the highway bridge). Feel free to post your questions here - if I dont answer them someone else will! Again, Welcome everyone!

I'm looking forward to trying this a couple times during my winter break. Unfortunately, I'll have a Wed. evening class out in Brockport this semester, so I'll only be able to stop by during breaks. Thanks.

HI Cassandra! No problems - we have people drop in and out as their schedules dictate. We are trying to gear the sessions so everyone can get something to take away from the meetup , even if they can only come sporadically. Let me know if there is anything in particular that would be useful to you.
