Alternative Music Milonga (Denver Tango Festival)

Alternative Music Milonga (Denver Tango Festival)

Want to practice your tango at a great venue? The Denver Tango Festival, held over Memorial Day weekend, is a fabulous place to do this! One of the highlights of this event is the Alternative Music Milonga on Saturday afternoon. If you would like to join us at this portion of the festival, please RSVP on our meetup calendar, so that we know to look for you.

Just so you know upfront, we would not recommend this as a place for beginners to learn tango, but instead, it is a wonderful opportunity to practice what you have already learned, or just sit back to watch and be inspired! Here is the link that explains the details about this festival. (Please note that at the moment the a la carte price for the Alternative Music Milonga is not listed. However, last year, the cost was $15, so we assume the price for this year's milonga will be the same or comparable.)

What is an Alternative Music Milonga?

First of all, the word 'milonga' in the tango world has three different meanings depending on the context in which it is used. 'Milonga' can refer to a specific type of tango dance, a specific type of music, and, also, it can refer to a social dance where a variety of tango music is played. The Alternative Music Milonga at the above event refers to a social dance. The reason it is called an Alternative Music Milonga, instead of just a Milonga, is because the music that is played is not traditional tango music, but instead tends to be more funky and contemporary.

To see what this type of event is like, here is a YouTube video of an Alternative Milonga held in Portland, Oregon:

If you are coming and would like to sit with us, remember to RSVP, so we can discuss where would be a good place to meetup. This is a very popular event, so it will definitely be crowded, but for those that arrive early, we should have no problem finding seats together.

Looking forward to this event!
