I picked up ballroom dancing in college on a whim. I have been competing professionally since and have spent the bulk of my professional career proving that anyone can dance if they have good guidance. Never say, "I can't!" Come see how you can!
My goals started off quite modest. I was not a natural dancer by any means, but I had a series of wonderful teachers that showed me that there is nothing magical or unattainable about dancing. It's all a series of small movements that simply need to be coordinated. Some of us just need a little more help than others. In 2007, I won the US national championships in Pro/Am American Smooth (ballroom), which just goes to show you that anyone can learn to dance. Now, I dance professionally, and my goal is to continue to develop my understanding of the mechanics of dance in order to continue placing well in the professional circuit, as well as pass along what I know to both competitive and social students. I strongly believe that social dancing is very important, as you can continue to dance well in to old age, whereas professional competitive dancing has an expiration date. It is in social dancing that we share a common joy with others and where we can dance and express without judgement.
Well, I created this class, but the idea for the class came from talking to countless people who want to learn to ballroom, latin, or social dance, but then fall over from shock when they hear about the price of private lessons. The ballroom community has little interest in creating good group classes, and social group classes are often hard to find or poorly run (obviously not all of them!). Coming from a formal teaching background, I wanted to create a system where people could get quality training at a price they could actually afford. These first little classes are an attempt to begin creating a community of budding artists that can sustain their dance education long-term. Social dancing also requires more than just classes. It requires other people to dance with and places to go dancing. The places already exist. We just need to get some friends together and get busy!
So far so good! The group that came out tonight is really lovely, and I am looking forward to getting to know everyone better. I think our end of the course outing to the Cicada Club is going to be wonderful!
This social dancing concept sounds intriguing
Ballroom is classy and salsa is like spicy hot
How do I sign up? Week ends available?
Thanks for the greeting, Lorena. I'm only in LA episodically, but hopefully it works out to join up with you sometime soon!
Hi Lorena, Thanks for the warm welcome.
I hope your group is successful and gets off to a great start. As far as my ballroom rental business, we're developing the website and designing more dresses. Once the website is up, I'll definitely let you know of opportunities to rent or sell dresses that you're holding onto. My design studio is located in downtown LA, so if you ever see an opportunity to co-market, please don't hesitate to contact me. (www.KEdancewear.com)
Thank you, dear! I sure hope so! It's looking like this group will be a great success! There are a group of social dancers here in Northern Nevada who go down to LA from time to time and I think they could really benefit from this - I will be sure to spread the word! Best of luck!
