The new film from the writer and director of 2011’s The Guard is a masterful sophomore effort. Gleeson plays Father James Lavelle, a village priest told in the confession booth that he is going to be killed in 7 days. The unseen would-be murderer is hell-bent on revenge for past crimes committed by the church and has chosen James as a symbol to be destroyed. Left with a week to figure out which member of his flock wants him dead it becomes a whodunit of sorts, full of gallows humour but packing a wallop of emotional power. Gleeson is a performer of rare brilliance, and here his hang-dog expression and soulful eyes hint at the hidden depths of this parish priest.
