Thanks again Lee for today's studio opportunity, it was a good experience and proved to be bags of fun as per usual. It was a pleasure to meet Ricky today and to see Mo & Sandy again. Both the models Joe & Amani were a crack and obliged us going over and above the call of duty (Joe knows what I mean) Lol. Thanks for being game you guys, I appreciate your patience.

Hi Lee, I'm looking forward to Sunday! Do we just turn up for our session, or can we arrive earlier?

    March 24, 2014

    • Lee

Hi Ricky, I have arranged the sessions so that each one has a 30 minute gap in between, so everyone can arrive a little earlier. Personally I think because of the size of the room it should be ok for members to observe the previous session and enjoy a cup of tea.

      March 24, 2014

    • Ricky

      Fantastic! See you Sunday.

    Can I have session 3 please? - thanks :-)

    1 · March 23, 2014

  • Lee

    Hi everyone,

I'm so glad that there are only 7 days to go until this event takes place.

I thought that I would just mention that you are all welcome to take along any props you feel that you might want to use for the shoot. This could be anything from a pair of glasses or a stool to a suitcase or a gun :-p

In the mean time it may be a good idea to think about a few poses. I often just take pictures with my phone of things that I see in magazines that I think look interesting and I simply try to copy them or use it as a source of inspiration for my own work

  • Sandy J.

Hi Shabs, No problem, I don't mind sharing, I am sure you will take care. Early afternoon suits me as I would prefer to watch the experts for a while.

    • Shabs W.

Thanks Brian that could work for me too, season 2 is perfect for me if there is still space. Please let me know what memory card I will need and can order one now :)

      March 21, 2014

  • Brian K

HI Lee, I don't have an external flash is it a lost cause ? Or can I borrow one for my cannon ?

    1 · March 18, 2014

    • Lee

No need to worry Brian, everyone attending will be using the studio lights that LofC will be providing

In total we have 4 studio lights so trust me you will not need to take along your own flash at all.

Thanks a lot for asking and I look forward seeing you!

      March 19, 2014

  • Biscuits

That way im free for lunch and can bring gels if you need them

    March 18, 2014

    • Lee

    March 18, 2014

  • Ricky

Fantastic! Can you put me down for session three.

    1 · March 18, 2014

  • Ricky

Hi Lee, as I've not done a studio shoot before, what equipment will i need if attend?

    March 18, 2014

    • Lee

As long as you have an SLR/DSLR with a hot shoe you will be fine Ricky. I will be able to support you with choosing the correct settings for your camera.

      March 18, 2014

    • Paul

Sony users may require an adaptor, some/all? of their cameras have a Sony specific hot shoe.

      March 18, 2014

  • Biscuits

Paid, may I have half of session 3 please?

    1 · March 17, 2014

    March 16, 2014

  • Brian K

I would like to practice, happy with the fees never taken part in a photoshoot should be good fun.

    1 · March 11, 2014

  • Lee

We have confirmed one model so far for this shoot and are awaiting a confirmation from another.

So it will be a model shoot after all. £27 for a 1 hour slot.
    2 photographers per slot

    February 16, 2014

    • Paul

Hope it's an experienced model. :)
Will there be an MUA? I might know someone I can ask who would perhaps work TFP.

      1 · February 16, 2014

  • Sandy J.

This is all very new to me and I am not sure if I will be able to partake in this mission. I would be happy to come along to watch and to help with any tasks outside of the shoot.

  • Darran

    Hi Lee,
I'd strongly recommend having some structure to the day with defined theme and shoot plan - it might end up as a bun fight otherwise. I'd recommend pre-booking a model(s) - you're bound to get a fully booked out event in Croydon.
    Three format suggestions:
    A) Hourly shoot slots which allow for 1 Photographer to shoot per hour (good if the attendees know their lighting and studio etiquette)

    B) Hourly shoot slots which allow for 2 Photographers per hour working together switching back and forth giving 30 mins each

    C) A group shoot where everyone turns up at the same time and see each other working. Each photographer shoots for (say) 5 mins then rotate out until everyone has shot that particular set of poses then change pose or outfit and repeat. (This is the most sociable option). You'd need <8 attendees or each tog will be waiting 40+ mins until they get another round of shots in.

    Hope that helps
    D

PS. Does the CVA have a studio set-up with lighting/backdrop etc?

    2 · February 3, 2014

    • Lee

Great suggestions Darran. CVA only provide the space, Lenses of Croydon have all the equipment.

      February 3, 2014

  • Paul

    Definitely interested!

From personal experience the "hang out for 6 hours" doesn't work very well, it's too ad-hoc and not everyone will come away with something tangible.

    So, I would probably suggest:
    * TFP or bring our own models
    * Give each photographer a time slot
    * Get each photographer to come with a shoot idea/concept they want to achieve, be that something as simple as high key, or low key, etc.

So each photographer comes armed with an idea and a chunk of time so that they can come away with something good.

I'm happy to help others with their lighting, etc.

This will work if we have someone to manage time on the day, each person has a shoot idea and we pool together with some subjects and some lighting guidance. :-)

  • Kevin S.

Without models, what is the purpose of the shoot? It's hard to think of a large group of photographers working as a team. Togs never work as a team, they all want to hog everything and get the best shot. Without something to shoot we'll all just be playing with our equipment :o)

    February 2, 2014

    • Lee

I have a completely different experience of working with other photographers to be honest & I am not ruling out working with models either but I don't want to end up with models on the day, 4 photographers who come along and have a great time and a debt for LofC.

If we go the one hour route then everyone can bring along their own model. However if I arrange a couple of models we would have to increase the cost.

Kevin I think it's about what one wants to achieve from the session some people are eager to practice using a studio set up and others with greater experience perhaps are more interested in building their portfolio which is fair enough.

  • Kukku H.

I think if I am paying I would like tutorials not just go clicking away randomly. It would be nice to have a tutorial about studio lighting and photography first.

    February 2, 2014

    • Lee

Kukku you may find the event in April more suited to you but it will be a lot more expensive than £20.

The cost to this one is chiefly due to the fact that it falls on mothers day coupled with fact that LofC will cover the shortfall in terms of cost.

  • Ricky

Hi Lee, I would like to join you on this MeetUp as this is something I would like to get into. 6 hours as group would work, as we can all then bounce ideas between each other.

    1 · February 2, 2014

    • Lee

I take your point Ricky and it would be great to have you on board.

Personally I am more inclined to run the 6 hour session so that we can all work together as a team. But I would like to get everyones views so that we can come to a conclusion collectively.

Thanks so much for sharing your view mate

      February 2, 2014

  • Kevin S.

What about models? How many 'stations' are there? If we bring our own lights is there room for more stations?

    February 2, 2014

    • Lee

I think we can squeeze in 2 stations in there. We have 4 Elinchrom lights, 3 soft boxes, a beauty dish and two backdrop stands.

We may need another backdrop and I can order a second trigger or possibly two by then.
