Stinson Beach - Mt. Tam Loop

This moderately strenuous 6 mile loop starts and ends at the Stinson Beach fire station. We'll go up the Matt Davis trail to the Coastal trail; these two miles are extremely steep and include many steps. The intersection of the Coastal trail and Willow Camp fire road is a great place for lunch with stunning views of the ocean and Bolinas (fog permitting). From here it's about two miles downhill to Stinson Beach.

Getting there:

·  From US 101 in Marin County, exit #445b CA 1/Mill Valley/Stinson Beach

·  Head West, following signs for Hwy 1

·  Left at junction with Almonte Blvd to stay on Hwy 1

·  Stay left at junction with Panoramic Hwy (don’t turn right towards Muir Woods)

·  In Stinson Beach, Belvedere becomes one-way heading west, so park near Shoreline Hwy or take the next right and loop around the block looking for parking (on Calle del Mar, then right on Buena Vista Way which becomes Belvedere)

A lovely day in a lovely place with lovely women. What an enchanting town! Can I comment on one thing please? On a scale of 1 - 10 in intensity this was an 8.3 for me. The uphill was vicious and the downhill was hard on the knees. I urge anyone doing this hike to be prepared for a POWERFUL cardio work out then have poles for the downhill to keep on your feet and to save your knees. It was short which made it easier than it could have been.

Is this a dog friendly hike?

    • Deborah

No, most of this hike is within Mount Tam State Park which does not allow dogs. :(

Bummer! I know you do hikes where I can bring him. I have been working so much, i really wanted to be able to do a hike and include him so I'm going to have to pass this time and hope to be able to join you on a dog friendly hike in the future.

Where should I park when I get there? Is there a lot?

I vaguely recall parking across the street, but I haven't driven there in ages. If anyone else has parking suggestions, please chime in.

Found this on the bay area hiker web site " turn right (at the fire station) onto Belvedere Avenue. Look for parking on the left side of the road before the "do not enter/wrong way" signs."

Also the map link above says 101 and Belvedere. Did you mean hwy 1 rather than 101?

    • Deborah

That definitely should read Hwy 1.

    Hi Marie,
I'm a public transit supporter, and also ask for rides for some of the hikes. Here is the link to the Golden Gate Transit bus to Stinson Beach.

Also look at the routes from San Francisco to Marin City. The 70/80 goes from SOMA. Possibly others.

By the way - no car and live in SOMA...

I would love to join you all. I'm new to SF (moving in July 24th) - and learning my way around. Any suggestions about how to get there to meetup? Thanks!
