Weekend Getaway - Union Square, San Francisco

The Plan:

We depart 7am Saturday morning picking up Drifters along the way like high school (so vehicles are safe and not towed).  After enjoying a fabulous breakfast enroute, maybe in Los Banos, we continue the journey.  Due to traffic congestion, hills, and bad drivers, we park at a BART and ride into town.

We will utilize an app to determine which hotel to stay out once we know for sure who has made it and if anyone wants to room together or stay separate.  The goal is to be located in Union Square.  Examples of rates are such:

Hilton $150, Westin $189, and other similar rates.

For day Sat/Sun activities, China/Japan town, cable car museum, and Coit Tower are likely options, along with other activities within the vicinity; there is rumor that its also Aussie Day.  We'd enjoy a fantastic dinner together, and attend a comedy show.  Departure is Sunday 4pm.

Update:   Due to unforeseen developments, it was necessary to amend departure from Fresno from Friday afternoon to Saturday morning.  While unfortunate, it saves in hotel costs plus makes the logistics in travel easier.   Specific plans will be posted by Sunday, January 19th.

Original post:

We can meet somewhere locally, carpool for those interested, and discuss travel logistics via comments on here.

I've never been to SanFrancisco, so I have no idea where to go or what to do. Ideally we will stay at the same hotel or within close proximity and hangout together a good portion of the trip.

If anyone has ideas or suggestions, please post.

I'm sharing this video time-lapse of the beautiful and amazing San Francisco with you guys! It was just released today and the video is amazing. They filmed some at the Parc 55 Hotel rooftop, I believe. The band performing the cover song, dredg is a favorite of mine too. I thought you guys would enjoy this too....as I think we all left a piece of our hearts in San Francisco.... : )

That's awesome you saw this video & loved it too! They really did an amazing job with it. How cool it must've been to see them film the fireworks & then see it in this video knowing you were right by them. :)

Well, I didn't know they were doing this at the time; I was shooting from around the bottom of the hill in the foreground of the fireworks shot (normal photography, not timelapse). I probably spent an hour yesterday looking at that group's timelapses and videos, as I'm just getting into timelapse myself. :)

It was an amazing weekend. Some of the highlights were boating underneath the Golden Gate Bridge, close up view of Alcatraz, tea sampling in China Town, accidentally joining a protests march, albeit briefly, hanging out on rooftops, and fabulous food and wine which included DimSum, sushi boats, and quality Italian. However what really made the trip was the great company of those that attended.

You summed this up well! Great memorable moments I'll never forget! Agree with you, everyone's great company is what made the trip :) it was great to hang out with all of you. Fun times!

I had such a blast! It was wonderful company that made all of our great experiences so much better. It was perfect weather, scenic views, historic trolley rides, tasty variety of food, spreading the deliciousness that is the Moscow Mule to new friends. We experienced so many of the things that make SF a world class city. We set the bar pretty high on our "maiden voyage" my new friends! Looking forward to more getaways! :)

Just wanted to confirm pickup tomorrow. Mandy is being picked up at 635am, Edward 645am (still need an address unless Mandy already has it), and Mark at 7am. We will rendezvous with Stephanie +friend enroute for breakfast.

      I'll be ready at 7 o'clock, Anthony.

I've mapped out locations that were discussed so we can all take a look at the map and locations to plan what stops we want to go to first, what's close to each other, etc. I think it would be good to all look at this at breakfast or on the Bart :)

Mark, your pick up time should be at or close to 7 AM. I will contact u via email for pick up location. Is Stinking Rose o.k. with everyone for Sat dinner? A friend of mine said Coit Tower is closed for renovations but u can still hike up there if you want a view. The Hilton Union Square looks like a great location for the things we want to see. Stephanie, we will rely a bit on your knowledge to get us around on Sat. I'm thinking Pier 39, Coit, China Town, Trolley ride and whatever else strikes your fancy. First time tourist sights all the way. On Sun I would love to have sushi lunch in Japan Town if that's groovy with the group. If any one has any suggestions for Sat or Sun please let me know. I'm a bit of a dork and like to have locations mapped out. BUT I'm o.k. with doing things on the fly too... Gonna be a fun first trip!

Tickets can be bought online at cobbscomedyclub.com (I haven't figured out how to add hyperlinks to these comments on my iPAD). Question now is.... 830 or 1030?

      January 21, 2014

    • Stephanie

I wanted to mention that I won't be joining you guys for the comedy club. I'll be heading back home at that time.

Also as FYI, Dublin BART to Powell St $6 (nice!) and if we can get Hilton Union Square hotel only .2 miles (4 min walk) From Powell St station. Trains run every 11 - 28 min. Anthony and I will be the drivers for the Fresno/Visalia car poolers. For the riders please plan to have $ for gas. Turlock breakfast at 830-ish. AJs Cafe 2800 Geer Rd, Turlock, CA. Stephanie, we will be in touch day of for actual eta so you and your friend aren't stuck waiting for us at the restaurant. First plan of action is to drop our bags at the hotel and then all stare wide eyed at our tour guide a.k.a. Stephanie! Lol...

China Town meander out to Fishermans Warf/pier 39 sightseeing along the way, Coit Tower, Lombard and whatever else strikes our fancy. Lunch we can decide on the fly as the group gets hungry. Since Anthony is a SF first timer I vote we defer to him on Sightseeing adventures. I would love to see the thinker but its a bit out of the way. We will just see how we feel as the day goes by...

Also want to add Bart parking is free over the weekend : )

      January 23, 2014

Also, I suggest bring cash for public transportation, cabs, the f line trolly is $1.50 or $2 and the Cable car is I think $5 and those two only accept cash if just hopping on.

I've eaten at a Spanish restaurant in San Francisco a couple of times. Great food. Might be another good option.

    January 21, 2014

    • Stephanie

I agree, this would be another option. Do u have names of those restaurants so we can check out their menu?

      January 21, 2014

    • EdwardE

      I believe it's called, "Alegrias."

      January 21, 2014

I keep forgetting to add that I'm bringing my friend on this trip too (she's not a member of this group-yet).

Oh okay, not a problem :)

      January 21, 2014

    • Stephanie

Thank u! I did not see an option to add a plus one....

      January 21, 2014

  • Mark E.

I did check out the restaurants Stephanie suggested (thank you Stephanie). They all look good, especially Belden Place. Belden seems to be very versatile in terms of different tastes. I like the Tonga Room's decor and menu, as well.

    January 21, 2014

    • Stephanie

You're welcome! As I replied to Anthony, I think we should all decide on one place & make reservations to guarantee a spot. I'm open to any of them. I'd be glad to make the reservations as well.

      January 21, 2014

    • EdwardE

I'm open to anything. I always like trying out new places.

      January 21, 2014

  • Mark E.

That was good input from everyone on the restaurants! Anthony has a good point about Belden and Stinking Rose. I vote for The Tonga Room:-)

    January 21, 2014

  • Mark E.

I think it would a wise idea to make a reservation because it would be a typically busy weekend evening, with it being Saturday night.

    January 21, 2014

So where is the departure point? Or can we be picked up at our houses? I live in Visalia, so Im assuming that some of us live here in Visalia. Please advise. Thanks.

Gah! I heart Yelp... Reviews on Stinking Rose are so-so. So.... Piazza Pellegrini is near Cobb's Comedy club. Foodies, please, check out both menus on line & let me know. Or... Any other suggestions?

Hello Mandy and Anthony: I just RSVP'd for San Francisco. Anthony, I don't mind sharing a room, if you're fine with it. Mandy, at your earliest convenience, please send me any details you may have as far as the room(s) and my pick up time on Saturday morning. Please let me know if you need any information from me. You should have my personal email and phone number when we met this past weekend at Peeve's. This is going to be a great, weekend getaway.:-)

Just to clarify, we won't go through Los Banos if we are picking up Stephani in Turlock & heading to Dublin BART. Hot Rod Cafe in Turlock has good Yelp reviews and its right off the 99 freeway :)

    January 18, 2014

    • Anthony V.

      Oh yeah, I'll update that.

      January 19, 2014

    • Stephanie

I've added my RSVP. I'm looking fwd to joining u guys. I'll still only be making a day trip for me. I've never been to Hot Rod cafe & be willing to try it with u guys. Another option in Turlock for sit down is Huckelberrys and AJs cafe which are more inland from 99 but not too far. They are both good spots for breakfast. It might be good to make reservations since these spots can get packed. If u guys wanna let me know which place u decide & approx time I can make reservations. Let me know if I can help.

Stinking Rose has my vote for dinner. I loooove garlic! Cobbs Comedy Club has a sketch show that looks fun. Shows at 830 & 1030, $25. Dottie's True Blue Cafe looks good for breakfast Sunday. Only .3 miles away from Hilton if we stay there. Def walkable :)

I used to live there and can provide recommendations on live entertainment venues / events / activities and night life.

    January 10, 2014

    • Anthony V.

Awesome; what part of SF would you recommend staying that has different entertainment venues within walking distance?

      January 10, 2014

    • Rick

If you get a hotel near Union Square you'll be set. SF is only 7 miles X 7 miles you should be able to get just about anywhere by walking / cabbing or the bart. Great places to have a drink are at the 5th / Mission bar and grill, Schroeders - for Das Boot!, and Max's Bistro. There's a club for every personality. My haunts are the Champagne lounge, Ruby Skye, 1015 Folsom - for EDM, and the W Hotel. I have a friend who promotes for those establishments so I usually get all my groups in free and sit with the owners in the VIP section. I work for a travel agency now so I can hookup hotels if anyone needs them. You can also check out this link for more ideas on things to do while in the City even though most of us will probably be nursing hangovers lol http://www.partner.vi...
