Ozark Trail ~ North Middle Fork Section

  • This location is shown only to members

  • Event description:

We will be hiking on the North Middle Fork section of the Ozark Trail.  I am anticipating 10- 14 miles, which will take us approximately 7-8 hours.  This is an all day trip, on rugged trail with several creek crossings.  I have not hiked this trail before, we will be doing it together for the first time.

If you have not hiked 10+ miles, then please do not RSVP to this hike.  This is not a beginner's hike.

    Trip Overview:

We will be hiking from Hwy DD/Hwy 32 trailhead south to Barton Fen.  To do this we will do a car shuttle.  Ideally we can all carpool from the Imperial commuter lot (exit 186 off highway 55) start at 6:30.  If not carpooling meet at Hwy DD/ Hwy 32 trail head by 8:30 am.  There we will sort out how many cars to take to the Barton Fen trailhead and take minimum personnel south to drop off cars for shuttling, returning in one car, while rest of us wait about a half hour.

Map with directions between trailheads will be handed out at the Hwy DD/Hwy 32 trailhead.

    Trail Map: http://www.ozarktrail.com/maps/detailed/MiddleFork1mile63to74.jpg

Difficulty: Moderate and at times strenuous

Trail surface: Rock, gravel and packed earth

What to bring?  (This is not a complete list, refer to REI or other internet sources for a complete list of suggested hiking essentials.)

    Plenty of water

Head lamp or flashlight - we will be finishing near dusk.

    Dress in layers

    Hiking boots

Water shoes or sandals - there are a couple of creek crossings.

    Trekking poles

Feed bag - plenty of snacks, fruit, etc. to keep your energy level up.

Stay tuned for weather conditions on the day of this hike!

Carpool: Everyone please meet  at the Imperial commuter lot. Take Imperial exit #186, make a right turn then make a left turn at the next intersection (West Outer Rd.) Commuter lot will be on the left.  We will leave promptly at 06:30.

Directions to the Hwy DD/32 trailhead from Imperial MO:

    55 South, go 12 miles

67 South (Exit 174B) toward Bonne Terre/Farmington, go 30 miles

MO-32 W (Exit towards Leadington/Park Hills), go about 20 miles

    Left onto 21 South/32, go 4 miles

Right onto MO-32 W, go 14.4 miles to Hwy DD

Turn right onto Hwy DD, first opportunity to right is trailhead.

Due to probable trail conditions Walter and I have decided to postpone this hike for a later date.

This sounds like a great hike. I vote for key exchange or car shuttle so that we can cover more ground.

A word to the couple of first timers - watch that Esther lady. She is kind of mean. One time she tried to push me off the side of a cliff. On a positive note - keep her between you and bears you come upon - even the bears are scared of her.

I know you are all meeting in Imperial and leaving at 6:30 on the 11th. I will meet you guys at the trail head since I live only about 45 miles from there. My question is, you have about 80 miles to travel...what time do you plan to arrive at the TH? 7:45? I will plan to be there by 7:30 unless I hear otherwise.

The plan is to meet at the commuter lot at 6:30 and start hike at 9:00. We're building in extra time as a cushion. Plan to arrive at trailhead around 8:30.
