  • This location is shown only to members

Trip Overview:

We'll do a 14 mile hike on the Ozark Trail from Hazel Creek recreation area  to the Council Bluff recreation area.

Meet at Council Bluff Lake at the Wild Boar Boat Launch.  From here we will shuttle to Hazel Creek and hike back to the lake.   We are ending our hike at the lake, so that anyone who wants to can take a nice cool dip in the lake.  Bring your swim suit.  There is a very nice beach/swimming area.

• Difficulty: Moderate and at times strenuous

• Trail surface: Rock, gravel and packed earth

What to bring?

• Plenty of water

• Head lamp or flashlight

• Insect repellent ( I suggest treating your clothes with permethrin).

• Sun screen

• Hiking boots

• Water shoes or sandals (there are five creek crossings!)

• Trekking poles

• Feed bag - plenty of snacks, fruit, etc. to keep your energy level up.

Stay tuned for weather conditions on the day of this hike!

Always check back the day of the hike for last minute updates

Carpool:  We'll leave at 06:00 promptly from commuter lot located at Gravois and I-270 (right side parking lot).

Directions to Council Bluff Lake - Wild Boar Boat Launch (Not the campground)

From Potosi, drive 13 mile south on MO P to MO C.  Drive a quarter mile west on MO C to MO DD.  Take MO DD 7 miles south to the Council Bluff Recreation Area entrance and follow the signs to the Wild Boar Hollow boat launch and picnic area.

What a hike! We sweated buckets, picked up a hiker along the trail, watched Walter trail run with a 40 pound backpack...but (for once) we didn't get lost and nobody fell down! And, we had a great post hike swim in the lake! Look for the another OT hike in July to finish out the Trace Creek section.

Sorry, we missed you. I usually copy from a previous hike page, then update them with the current hike information. Next time, I will move the carpool information to the top of the page so it is more obvious. But know, that the time listed for the event is the anticipated start time for the hike and I will post the time we are leaving for the hike with the carpool location. See you next time.

I strongly recommend all of you meet at the commuter lot. We've had trouble in the past with people going to the wrong place at Council Bluff. Also, the shuttle that Debbie and I worked out is not complete in the above description. I have printed maps with directions for all drivers. These maps will be essential as finding the trailheads can sometimes be tricky and if we don't stick together we may have cars at different locations. I'm talking from past experience.

Ok so now im confused. The trip overview is gone. Is everyone meeting at the originally planned commuter lot? I forgot where that was at.

      June 19, 2014

    • Debbie

Yes, meet at the commuter lot. Sorry, I confused you.

Hey all - Esther and I have come up with a new plan. We will meet at the Wild Boar boat launch, then carpool over to the parking lot where we will end the hike. This parking lot is not clearly marked, so we wanted to provide an easy spot for everyone to meet before we begin our hike. From here, we will leave our cars and shuttle up to Hazel Creek. Once, we have ended our hike we can go over to the lake and take a swim! Bring a suit and cooler, if you want to hang out at the lake for a bit.

Great idea, but let's save it for another hike. I don't know whether there are picnic facilities at swimming area, or not? How about we check it out this time, then plan a hike around the lake (12.5 miles) in the fall? The lake hike is fantastic! And, we'll know how to prepare for a cookout. Maybe, even a hike/kayak/camping trip? Thank you!

And ummm, Mr. Keith...are you going on that float trip? If so, prepare to be submerged in the river and/or check your sleeping bag before you go to sleep.

Is you? Nice typing, but you get the drift!

    June 18, 2014

  • Greg K.

OK. Just remember to bring quarters is you plan to shower afterwards (around 7 or 8)

    1 · June 18, 2014

  • Debbie

Also - note! There is the potential of 5 creek crossing. Bring your water shoes/sandals and a towel to dry your tootsies. Hiking in wet socks - is not fun...

Can't after all - dang - 3rd time will be a charm. Have fun - I know you will.

    June 12, 2014

    • Debra

Hmmm, wonder if you will be successful one of these days. I know not to stand too close to the edge on these "hikes" - that I did learn - but orienteering is not my strong point. I am alway amazed that when I come out of the restroom on the way down, you're still there.
