Challenging Adventure Weekend in Arkansas - Third Try!

Time for an action-packed trip to the Richland Creek Wilderness area!

This area is one of the most beautiful areas in the Buffalo River area, yet also very rugged and remote. This trip is designed for experienced hikers. This meetup is restricted to a small group size due to the nature of this hike.

On Saturday 3:30pm we’ll leave from Richland Creek Campground, BACKPACKING to the falls to spend the night.

The next morning we’ll rapidly day-hike toTwin Falls, as well as up to the Sandcastle (without packs). The ascend and descend to the sandcastle is very, very steep and long. You must be in good shape and have ankle-supporting hiking boots. I strongly recommend the use of trekking poles and water shoes, especially for crossing thigh-deep fast-moving water. Flip flops won’t do, promise.

A few climbers will be meeting early Saturday for climbing at their own risk. Contact me if you are interested. As usual, all participation is at your personal risk.

So how do I know if I can handle this hike?

Hey everyone, I'm not attending this meetup this time. One more year and another bone density test and I will return and take this monster back! (Yes, broke my ankle out there 3 years ago.) You guys and gals have a great time!

Weather forecast shows an overnight low of 50. Great for bringing your hammock

    April 3, 2013

    • Mandy

Yep! But bring a rain fly... it also shows a chance for thunderstorms!

      April 3, 2013

    • Mandy

Visibility seems in that area to always be worse than in the surrounding area. Because of that, we have already canceled the hike twice. But this time I am confident. Thank you for your contribution.

That's good Mandy, because I'm "hip" and it's hard to not be "high" on life when hiking in the hills or mountains.

For Directions Google "Richland Creek Campground, AR". Once you get off HWY 16, be sure to drive the gravel roads carefully...we recently had two people damage their cars' undercarriage on that route.
Plan for 3 hours drive time...that is without getting lost. We can't afford delays due to the late start time. So please be there by 3:30pm on Saturday, with your packs packed for the overnight-hike.
    Looking forward to it!

    ATTENTION!!!
The NWA groups is no longer able to go...so, we can do our own thing. We could

    A) Backpack Richland, spend the night at the falls, hike (without packs) up to the Sandcastle on Sunday.
    B) Keep it as is as car camping with a long dayhike. Also, let us know if you are even still available...Thanks!

Here is my vote: A) we always have a lot of fun camping out there at the falls!

JUST RECENTLY BEEN TO RICHLAND CREEK CAMPGROUND AND DID THE HIKE. HAVE NO INTEREST IN GOING BACK SO SOON AND REPEATING IT. I HAD A BLAST AND KNOW ALL OF YOU WILL TO

    March 31, 2013

  • Mandy

Yes, we are! Hopefully the weather will stablize by then!

RETURNED TO RICHLAND CREEK CAMPGROUND TODAY AND TOOK THE HIKE TO TWIN FALLS AND RICHLAND FALLS. I HAD A BLAST. DID NOT SEE A PERSON OR A CRITTER THE WHOLE DAY. JUST ME AND MY HIGHER POWER ENJOYING THE BEAUTY OF NATURE. THE HIKE WAS CHALLENGING AND REMINDED ME A LOT OF COLORADO, WITH THE BEAUTIFUL SCENERY. THE PRIMITIVE TRAIL WAS NON EXISTING IN SOME PLACES AND I WADED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE STREAM QUITE A BIT. DIDN'T FIND SANDCASTLE BUT CLIMBED TO SOUTH RIDGES FOR RETURN TRIP AND FOUND WALKING THE RIDGES EASIER THAN THE STREAM VALLEY. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SHARING INFORMATION AND MAP CONCERNING THIS AREA. IT WAS A HIKE I WILL NEVER FORGET!!

MY WEEKEND FOR THE MOST PART WAS A DISASTER!! CAR HIT A ROCK AT THE TRAILHEAD(TH) AND RIPPED OPEN THE TRANSMISSION PAN. HAD TO BE TOWED 30 MILES FROM A VERY REMOTE LOCATION TO MARSHAL ARK, WHERE THEY ATTEMPTED TO HAMMER OUT THE PAN. LEFT THERE LATE SAT AFTERNOON FOR FAYETTEVILLE AND FOUND THE PAN WAS STILL LEAKING SO HAD TO ADD A QUART OF TRANSMISSION FLUID EVERY 100 MILES OR SO. THEN TO TO IT OFF GOT A SPEEDING TICKET FOR GOING 70 IN A 55 ZONE, WHICH I THOUGHT WAS A 65 ZONE!!DID MEET A GREAT COUPLE FROM LITTLE ROCK AT TH WHO GAVE ME ALL THE INS AND OUTS ABOUT THE HIKING AREA AND DROVE ME BACK TO WITS SPRINGS

    March 11, 2013

    • Jason M.

Wow, that sucks Chuck. A guy that came down last time put a hole in his oil pan on a vw bug. You definitely have to be careful on those Arkansas back roads! I should of been down at Richland kayaking, but woke up late, too much A&B partying the night before! Hope your next adventure goes smoother!

I will be hiking the area on Saturday when there is only a 20% chance of rain. Sorry the group is not going to make the Sunday hike I was looking forward to perhaps meeting my two new best friends Ian and Jason-LOL

The date has been confirmed by the NWA group. Yay!
Three is a charme! Let's try it again on April 6th-7th!

    March 8, 2013

  • Mandy

    Hi everbody,
I hate to doing this, but I am cancelling. The weather forecast is looking gloomy and wet. In that area the fog gets so thick that you can't see 20 feet far. Plus, if it's wet and slick, we'd be asking for trouble. So, since you all are dying to go, I will not "officially" cancel, but work on changing the date. That way, none of you will have to compete for spots again.
Depending on how soon I will get a new date from the other group, I may have to come up with a fictional date for now...so don't get confused. Once I have the "real" date, I will make sure to email you again.
Sorry about the inconvenience! I know you guys were as pumped about this trip as I was.

I'm locking in my Final Answer. Final Answer: I am there!
See I didn't even need to phone a friend!

I'll be in Arkansas already Friday night, I'm climbing at Sam's Saturday, then heading to the campground that evening/afternoon.

We're going to have fun people!

    1 · March 5, 2013

  • Jacob

As of now I'm planning on meeting up with the group at Sam's Throne and getting a ride from there. However, if there is anyone leaving from Springfield later in the day I would highly appreciate the chance to car pool with you. I will be more than happy to throw in gas money and can meet you at the Wal-Mart Super Center right off of 65 HWY just as you enter Branson. I will be ready by no later than noon and possibly sooner. Mandy offered me a ride but they're leaving right at 8:00. If you CAN meet me we can still make Sam's by 1:30 at the latest for two hours of climbing before leaving for Richland. When you see my car you'll quickly understand my reluctance of wanting to drive even to Sam's Throne.

We are planning to film a Harlem Shake video this weekend so bring your goofy outfits!! And prepare to get your shake on!!

  • Mandy

Jason, are you not climbing with us at Sam's ?

    1 · March 1, 2013

    • Jason M.

I am, Carmen doesn't know this yet, but she'll probably catch a ride with someone down to Sam's. My current plan is to pick up my new playboat at OOO when they open at 9am Saturday , and then scoot up to Sam's to meet you probably around 12:30-1pm.

It's a really fun hike.....hopefully it's not raining like last time (knock on wood).

Been here but we'd like to go back!

    February 15, 2013

  • Mandy

Michael, we'd be hiking with daypacks from the campsite. We will need Food, water, water shoes, towels (have to cross the rivers) in our packs. Need trecking poles. The hike up the mounain is very hard and steep (I wish we didn't have to take anything up there...) so pack light.

About how many miles is this hike round trip?

    February 4, 2013

    • Mandy

I would say a little under 8 miles. However, the elvation change is what gets ya!
