11th Annual Moonlight Bike Ride

The 11th Annual Moonlight Bike Ride benefiting The Discovery Center. Please join us on a great evening ride for a good cause. Must register through The Discovery Center website, in person at Discovery Center or if you are unsure of attending, you can register on site the night of the ride. Discount for early registration and a Moonlight Ride t-shirt for the first 200.

 http://www.discoverycenter.org/pages/11th_annual_moonlight_bike_ride/

This is a leisurely family/kid friendly ride. Safe routes, lots of cyclists and people sitting on porches and at curbs cheering people on as they ride through neighborhoods. Last year there were free pre-ride  Root Beer Floats courtesy of Mother's Brewing and there will be free post-ride Village Inn pancakes. There have been a few changes (an earlier start time and assembly point on the west side instead of east parking lot). I will reconsider the TAH member meeting site. On site registration, sign in and picking up your t-shirt and swag bag is 5-6:15 pm.

Due to earlier start time, I will begin my ride from home and meet anyone that wants a longer and later ride at McDaniel Park Southcreek Trailhead at 5:15 pm. We will ride the bike routes to Discovery Center. You may choose 3, 7 or 14 miles. I will do two loops for 14 miles, have a pancake and then accompany all riding from McDaniel Park back to the trailhead. May make a couple of parking garage rooftops accents to enjoy the night view on the way back. Total mileage from McDaniel Park with two loops of Moonlight Ride is approximately 20 miles.

Helmets and front lighting required by Discovery Center. Helmet, front & REAR lighting required by me.

Riders participate at their own risks.

I'm with you...Lets Hang the Moon!

I am going to need your help to "Hang the Moon" back over The 12th Annual Moonlight Ride" in 2015. I will start a "Hang the Moon" campaign by late next week and ask that we get as many as possible to cut/paste and email a short message to the city manager and city council to restore the Moonlight Ride to the full moon and dark hours of the past ten years. I will send info out next week. I've been corresponding with Charlotte McCoy, Marketing/Special Events Director, Discovery Center about this year's ride. This year their revenue for the ride was down by $3,000. Worse, the ridership was down by 100; many who had paid but didn't show due to the heat. I would not expect them to register and pay next year. I'll be in touch.

Great ride and a great group. It was nice to meet those I hadn't met before. For those new to Take A Hike rides that started from The Discovery Center, sorry I missed you. There were too many riders to find you. I hope you enjoyed the evening and I hope you will join us on TAH exclusive rides so we can meet you.

I will not be going tonight. I almost lost it riding in the heat on the Frisco this morning. I am registered so if someone wants to take my place, have at it. :) I want the t-shirt tho!!!! Enjoy guys. I'll be back on the pavement when it drops below 90.

I shouldn't have eaten breakfast... and the heat came on so fast! I'm a good rider at 80F LOL but beyond that, I should stay home. :)

I'm going to meet you all at discovery center. That way I'll have my car to put stuff in and I'll bring extra cold water in case anyone needs it.

Sorry, I'm gonna bail out as well due to the heat ... enjoy, have fun!!!

Please be well hydrated before the ride and bring plenty of water to drink during the ride. We will make a stop after the first loop to check on each other before continuing. It was not the intent of The Discovery Center to hold the Moonlight Ride in the heat of late afternoon and in daylight. The schedule was forced on them by the city out of unfounded "safety concerns" after a decade of safe rides. They need our support and they will need our help to influence the city to permit this wonderful event to return to its normal hours next year. More on this later.

Would love to go this year, but the time change of the event conflicts w/previous plans elsewhere. Have fun and try to stay cool! :-)

Donna, You got glow in the dark tattoos?

    July 31, 2014

    • Donna J.

No but that's a good idea! Maybe I can find some!

      July 31, 2014

    • Jackie C.

I got some glow in the dark paint somewhere. It glows best in black light though, or after a bright light charge.

The website mentioned team costume contest as well as individual costumes, any ideas or plans for the group?

    July 23, 2014

    • Wayne G.

Fashion is not my strongpoint. There are interesting costumes and accessories each year. We have a large group so if anyone has ideas...chime in.

      July 24, 2014

    • Jackie C.

My daughter tells me that most costumes will be too warm for mid-August.

I registered today! I am planning on meeting you to ride from McDaniel Park and will ride the 14 mile route.

How far is this ride and what is the level of challenge?

    June 25, 2014

    • Donna J.

The moonlight ride is 7 miles and is a family ride. There are even kids on bikes with training wheels. It is very fun and you will see entire families ride this one. It is pretty much a flat ride through the center of town. People really decorate up the bikes (some also themselves) and people sit outside their houses along the route to cheer us along.
