Goat Trail and optional Granny Henderson's Cabin

The best way to descibe this hike is that it's 2 miles in and 4 miles out.  Strangely, we cover the same ground.  Oh, it's downhill going in and uphill all the way out and that is where you pay your dues!

Join me Saturday Nov 10th for a scenic hike in Arkansas with a view of the Upper Buffalo River from high upon Big Bluff. We’ll begin at the Center Point trail head just north of Ponca and hike down 2.75 miles to the Goats trail. This is a trail that goes out to the bluffs running along the Buffalo River. We’ll hike to the end of the Goats trail where we will stop and eat our lunch. The views are amazing.

This will be a Moderate ++ hike.  Total distance will be about 6.5 miles for those that only hike to the Goats Trail and back....add another 2 miles if you hike to Granny's  cabin which is optional. It’s a safe trail to hike but care and caution must be used…you are 250’ above the River and it is narrow in places. Every account of this trail section I have read is packed full of warnings and even some recommendations not to hike it at all..... but if you don't you are missing a treat. This is not a hike for young children or hikers not in good hiking shape. Pets are not allowed on Buffalo River trails.

If time allows we will drive to Jasper, Arkansas for dinner at The Ozark Cafe....great food...great atmosphere.

You will need to bring a pack of some sort to carry water and lunch/snacks on the trail.  Bring at least 3 bottles of water for this hike. Wear comfortable shoes.  Trekking poles/hiking sticks come in very handy for this hike!

This will be a fun outing and as always hikers hike at their own risk

Had a great time for my first outing. The people were interesting and fun. I'm a little quiet when meeting new people and like to watch and listen first. Great way to spend my Saturday and would go again!

It was a good hike, not as bad as I thought hiking out for me that is. Really good group, I enjoyed each and everyone's company. Yall need to go on the next hike, I will be very disappointed if you don't. Don't forget about dance lessons at Mo's on the plaza, really is fun and besides you can't beat a good time for only $5.00, Tues. and Wed.

Diane, If I can go, I'll just meet you at the trailhead. What time are you best guessing you'll be at the Centerpoint trailhead?

Kay, is there parking across from the trail head? Last week the parking lot was full when we went by heading to Hawksbill.

There's a camping area across the road. Not sure if you can just park there though.

All, we met at the Fast and Friendly and then carpool down to the trailhead. It's will take us about 1.5 hours to get there factoring in a bathroom break.

About how narrow are the tough spots? It seems like the fear of heights would cancel out the fun. However, after you do it once, I imagine it's a great confidence builder / growing experience. Any thoughts from the community about dealing with the intimidating height / mind game? I haven't been using trekking poles. I seem to do better with my hands free. I would plan on hugging the wall and staying away from the edge. Maybe I shouldn't attempt it.

Thanks for the inspiring advice Dottie.

Brian, unless you go over to the edge and look down, most people don't even know that you are on a ledge. I will add some more pics to give you an idea.

      October 9, 2012

  • Diane P.

Brian, I have personally helped several people beyond their point of comfort. Stick close to the inner edge and you will be fine!

    • Brian S.

      Thanks. Sounds encouraging.

      October 8, 2012

  • Diane P.

Dottie, I know your "shape" and you can do this. If friends are questionable, let them hike part way down and then turn back.

    October 8, 2012

    • Dottie P.

That's a good idea. I'm looking forward to it. I'm sure Lacey and Kathleen will enjoy the hike too!

      October 8, 2012

  • Brian S.

I do like the option of being able to turn around if it gets too hairy I must say. At least that way I'll find out what my limits are.

    October 8, 2012

  • Dottie P.

A couple of my girlfriends will be in town so this is a Might attend. I don't know what kind of condition they're in. This sounds like a fabulous hike to me!
