Jazz Jam at the Levine School of Music

  • Jan 25, 2013 · 7:00 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

The Levine jazz jam is an opportunity for musicians of any age and proficiency to experience jazz from the inside. In a fun and structured environment facilitated by Levine jazz faculty members, musicians will get a chance to play and improvise on a couple well-known jazz standards. In addition to facilitating the session, the Levine faculty will also provide general instruction and specific guidance where necessary. Jam sessions are a musical environment that everyone regardless of skill level can benefit from and enjoy, so you don't need to worry about being perfectly prepared.

All you need to do is come out and play! These jams are $5 at the door (or time of RSVP) for students not currently enrolled in Levine.

We will focus on the following tunes:

Take the 'A' Train

Future Jazz Jams: Friday February 22 – 7-9pm, Friday March 22 – 7-9pm, Friday April 19 – 7-9pm (as part of Jazz Appreciation Month), Friday May 31 – 7-9pm, Friday June 14

My daughter may like to come. She is 11 and has been taking guitar for about 3 years and electric for about 1 of those. If she came, we would probably come with her to watch. Do observers still pay the $5 fee? Should observers be included in the "RSVP"? And -- will there be others there her age?

Sorry for my delayed response. Absolutely come and bring your daughter. I am not sure about whether observers pay the fee. I believe that they do, but it may be best to ask in person. You can pay the fee either before or after the jam. Do not worry about an exact number for the RSVP, it is so we can estimate. There may well be others her age, though the group is primarily adults. But last time we had a piano player who was about 10, and her younger sister watching, and the time before that we had several young teenagers playing guitar.

Is it a good idea to listen to Mile's version of Summertime?

Absolutely. His version from "Porgy and Bess" (Miles Davis & Gil Evans) is a favorite of mine, though we may play it in a different key.
