Jazz Jam at the Levine School of Music

  • September 25, 2013 · 7:00 PM
  • Lang Auditorium

The Levine jazz jam is an opportunity for musicians of any age and proficiency to experience jazz from the inside. In a fun and structured environment facilitated by Levine jazz faculty members, musicians will get a chance to play and improvise on well-known jazz standards.

Jam sessions are a musical environment that everyone regardless of skill level can benefit from and enjoy. Students of all instruments, ages, and skill levels are welcome. All you need to do is come out and play! These jams are $5 at the door (or time of RSVP) for students not currently enrolled in Levine, folks who just want to listen and observe are welcome as well.

This jam will cover common tunes, ensemble concepts, and jamming. We will have some charts on hand, but students are encouraged to bring their own Real Book and suggest tunes to the group! Amplifiers, pianos, and a drumkit are provided.

It is not too late to sign up for group classes at Levine, include Jazz Theory, Jazz Improvisation, and both small and large jazz and rock ensembles for adults and youth. For more information, please email Gary Prince ([masked]) or see

    Hey all,
Can I call dibs on one of the pianos? Alternately, I can bring a keyboard & amp. Also I've been playing music a while, but very new to Jazz & Improv, I hope that's okay.

Hi Peter, sounds great! Everyone is welcome and we'll have pianos here, you're welcome to bring your keyboard too, if you prefer. We won't have everyone playing all at once so sharing shouldn't be an issue. See you tomorrow!

Thanks for the response. Unfortunately, some things came up at work today, and I'll need to be working tonight (the joys of being a Systems Administrator). So I'll catch you all next time.

    Hi Everybody,

I'm looking forward to the jam! Our new saxophone faculty Lyle Link and I will be running this jam.

We're going to try a little bit of a different format than usual for this one. We are going to run this jam more like an actual jam session, as opposed to a workshop, meaning we won't really be setting tunes or a topic ahead of time, we will instead invite participants to call tunes on the spot, like an actual jam! We will still do coaching, of course, but there will be more of an emphasis on actually playing.

So we would encourage everyone to bring your fakebook! We will have plenty of charts on hand as well. If you want to prepare for the jam ahead of time, practice a couple tunes of your choosing, and come ready to call them! Lyle and I will certainly call tunes as well - I will definitely be calling "Autumn Leaves" and "I Got Rhythm", and some Bb Blues like "Tenor Madness" - so if you don't have a favorite tune you want to prepare and call, you can practice those.

      See everyone Wednesday!

      Best,
      Gary

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
