The Folk Jam at the Levine School of Music is a session for musicians of any background to learn a few traditional Old-Time and Irish tunes. It is open to kids and adults and is a great event to come with your whole family or on your own. Facilitated by Levine faculty Sarah Foard (fiddle) and Josh Walker (guitar and mandolin), this event is two hours long and roughly divided into a class (4-5 pm) and a jam (5-6 pm).
In the class portion of the session, melodic instruments, such as fiddle and mandolin, will learn the melody for three tunes, while back up instruments, such as guitar and bass, will learn the chords and back up styles for three tunes. Any instrumentalist is also welcome to learn and play percussion. All skill levels are welcome, and even advanced players are encouraged to attend the class and take the opportunity to refresh their knowledge.
After the class, everyone will come together for a jam session. It will start with the three tunes learned in the class, and then move onto other tunes. Anyone can suggest and lead a tune, so come with your favorite songs in mind. All instruments are welcome - fiddle, guitar, mandolin, flute, bodhran, anything! Come ready to learn, have fun, and jam!
