Skatelite® Brings The Retreat Skateboard & BMX Festival to Washington’s Lopez Island
More than 15 of the world’s top skate and BMX athletes will escape the mainland on August 17 and converge on Lopez Island in Washington State’s San Juan Islands to relax after the X Games, session on their own terms and hang with the locals. It’s called The Retreat presented by Skatelite®, the world’s premier manufacturer of skate ramp surface materials made in good ol’ Tacoma, USA. The Retreat is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to skate, ride and party with the best when they’re off the clock in one of North America’s most spectacular and relaxed landscapes.Summer days are balmy and long on Lopez with daylight that pushes to 10 p.m. Skatelite is donating and dedicating a new 60’x80’ skate park on the island that day and is hosting a free skate and BMX demo featuring the athletes and a festival with food, music and entertainment. California RampWorks, designers and builders behind every significant competition skate park in the world, will set up their vert ramp (coming directly from the X Games in LA) for the pros beside the new park to add to the spectacle.Athletes Attending

Getting to the RetreatYou will likely never have a chance again to be in such close presence to action sports greatness. The biggest challenge will be getting to Lopez Island. Make it happen. We have thought of everything to help you achieve your dream of participating in The Retreat. Want to make it a long-weekend? Come early with your camping gear and stay at Camp Skatelite - arrive on Friday, leave on Sunday. Prefer to come just for the day of the event, there are different considerations for walk-ons, bicyclists, cars and boaters.

Sorry for dropping out of the conversation, I'm going to Alaska next week and am caught up in planning. Well, I bought tickets to the Retreat with bike coverage but cancelled after Joe told me about the ten mile ride with gear (Joe's cool, by the way). I used to be in that kind of biking shape but I barely ride any more.

I'm considering bringing my vehicle and heading up early Saturday morning, leaving Seattle at 6am with a friend. I may return to the Friday plan but Saturday with vehicle seems pretty certain. Definitely up for hanging out.

Hey everyone, I purchased extra tickets to this event. I'd like to be able to sell the remaining tickets if at all possible. I didn't want anyone left behind. We're getting close and wanted to take this chance to talk about where and when we'll rendezvous, either on the mainland, or on the island. I'd like to be able to camp close together, so that we can meet, get to know each other and try and create a group of us. It might be helpful to if we need anything from one person or another.

I just went ahead and bought Friday - Sunday tickets for a friend and myself. We'll probably leave Seattle around 2:00 and catch the 5:10 ferry on Friday. This should be a KILLER weekend. How are you planning on going? I have a couple bikes I got for free and my buddy and I are considering going that route. I may take my Element but kind of doubt it.

Now, I still need to clarify the shuttle situation. Not exactly sure if there are shuttles from the park and ride to the ferry, shuttle from the ferry dock on lopez to the campsite, and shuttle from the campsite to the event. I'll ask when I get a chance. I would leave the bikes at home, and hope for the shuttles to do their magic, I'm guessing. Everyone up there is super stoked, I'm thinking we may be able to hitch a ride worst case scenario. It'll be an adventure for sure.

I think I opted for the 6ish ferries. I bought 4-5 extra tickets just to be safe. I wasn't sure if they'd sell out and I wanted tickets for those coming last minute, so if you know anyone, let me know.

I'm not 100% either but, dude, talk about an opportunity! It's hard to believe this is free, have they hosted this event in the past? I barely skate anymore and am currently babying my knees because of IT band issues but I'd LOVE to see all these pros do their thing on their own terms.

Hey Christian, sorry for the delay bro, between working, and scheduling our whitewater rafting/kayak trip and hiking/whitewater trip, I've been crazy busy. The answer to your question, they have never done a event like this. They're still building the permanent ramps. Btw, thanks for joining the group, good to have you.
