Friday Night at the Movies

THIS MONTH:

**********************************

And we will also listen to a little selection of the children's opera 'Brundibar.'

"Brundibár is a children's opera by Jewish Czech composer Hans Krása with a libretto by Adolf Hoffmeister, originally performed by the children of Theresienstadt concentration camp in occupied Czechoslovakia. The name comes from a Czech colloquialism for a bumblebee."

*********************************

We'll start the movie between 6-6:30, but please join us at any time during the evening. And yes, we will have some tissues available for this one!

LOCATION: Will be at the clubhouse of of the apartment complex of our lovely Judy. I'll send out the exact address a day or so before to those attending (major cross-streets are SR-51 & Northern Ave.)

FOOD: Popcorn and sodas will be available, and we're planning to order pizza(s) for dinner. If you're on any special diets, the clubhouse does have a mini kitchen with a fridge, microwave and toaster oven if you wish to bring your own food.

COST: Just a few bucks each to offset the cost of the food would be appreciated.

Beautifully done movie, hard to believe it's been 20 years, based on a true and harrowing story.

Come one, come all! The pizza and soda will be free, vegetarian and supreme. We’ll listen to only about 10 minutes of the children’s opera to honor Music of Remembrance and the children of the Holocaust.

Brundibar was code for Hitler; the opera mocked him and in the more than 50 performances the Nazi guards never caught on. The children were sent to the ovens after each performance so the cast was continually changing except for the girl who played the cat. She survived and has devoted the rest of her life, now in her 80’s, to attending every performance worldwide and speaking.
