I want to thank everyone who showed and were patient while we found a substitute venue, Adelito's Mexican Restaurant near Louisiana and Broadway that graciously hosted us at the last second. My star rating is for all the good sports who adventurously and patiently tagged along and regrouped and shared an enjoyable and colorful conversation about privacy. It was a departure topic in a way as it didn't fall along the left-right political lines, but was an important one that affects us all. As promised, I posted a guide of the scenarious and resources we discussed in the Discussion area. Thank you Rick and all for giving me a chance to facilitate today. I hope you enjoyed it, despite the last minute hassle from Strange Grounds.

On the one hand, I am glad that people are engaging in the upcoming topic. On the other hand, I believe that it would be more appropriate to take these types of discussions to the "discussions" section of the Meetup site (please see that link near the top of this page). Moving forward, please reserve this section, for greeting people, explaining a change of plans, etc.

You all make very valid comments regarding privacy (or lack thereof). But unfortunately, I think SOME of our privacy needs to be taken away due to the events that occurred on 9-11.

By framing 911 as a "war on terror" never ending against an undefined enemy who may do something bad it goes on forever and all of us are classified as potential threats. All of us are made to take off our shoes at the airport. All of us have our communications read.
It's evolved into power and control only. Yes bad things happen to people caused by other people but how constricted do you want your life to be to avoid risk?
And we have only their word to take for it. Everything is secret. Why? If they catch a bad guy why is it classified? Are we children to be protected? Seems like a very bad idea.

For some reason I can't seem to reply to Katherine - I was born in Queens and lived in NY until 2000. I will never forget 9/11, where I was etc. BUT I have also seen many documentaries on Conspiracy Theories surrounding 9/11. I DO believe that it was a set up. People died that was real and a shameful loss of lives. I don't mention this to argue (definitely not my intention) BUT because we should all look back to 9/11 and all the years in between to now -- it's an awful world we live in --- this country is going down the toilet. :(

Here is the preview of what we will be talking about next Saturday. Privacy. What does it mean to you and with the headlines about Drones and NSA spying on everything you do on line, what does it even mean anymore at all in this day and age? How can you protect it? And what organizations can you join or techniques can you use to protect it better, or at least as much as possible?
