Coffee, Tea, and Conversation

  • Mar 29, 2014 · 10:00 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

This will be our regular meeting, and if the past several are any indication, we are going to have another lively round of good open discussions and making some new friends.

We begin the group with a round of introductions where everyone takes 3-4 minutes to tell a little about themselves, and to address the topic of the day.  Once we've gone around the group, we shift gears, and open the floor for discussion.  This allows for a lot of good conversation, and everyone is free to participate as little or as much as they'd like.

As always, please show up a little early to get a cup of coffee (which Mary makes), etc, so we can start on time.  Please bring a breakfast item if you'd like, and note what you are bringing.  In addition, we supply plates and utensils as well as cups, but in the spirit of reduce/reuse/recycle, it'd be great if you would bring your own mug.

Also, to help defray the expenses of Meetup, we are asking for a nominal donation of $2.00.

I look forward to seeing you!

We don't always agree with each other, which is okay, as long as we respect differing views. Perhaps we should begin each meeting again reminding the group of our rules; each of us having 3-4 minutes to discuss the topic at hand, without interjections from others, and with the understanding that after everyone has spoken, one at a time, we can share or discuss more.

The conversation was good for the most part. I confess I have a problem with personal stories that don't relate to the subject, however, I really now what to know...Now what? What do we do with our thoughts, ideas, etc? Do we just vent each week or is there some plan to take action? I am new to this group and unable to be there each week, so perhaps I am missing something. I really respect each comment, but is our focus to only to comment or is it to help bring about change? Has this been discussed in the past?

Donna: Because of these meetings, I am now working in Andrew Romanoff's campaign office. I also think the meetings have got me to be more active i.e., signing petitions and writing to congress people. It has also given me the confidence to talk to people about the issues which I wasn't before. Perhaps we will continue to come up with ideas as to how we can bring about change.

I agree with both Mary and Randi. Not only is this a discussion group, but one that offers opportunities for us to become active participants in bringing change. We welcome ideas and suggestions as to how to get involved in our community and our government. We all bring different perspectives on the issues, which is a really good thing, in my opinion.

I apologize for missing meeting. I had to take my cat to the vet to determine if he can be helped or not. They could only get me in during meeting or not until Monday.

Hi Donna, I usually attend this meeting, but was unable to come today, and I wanted to address your comment below. It is frustrating to not be able to change things right now, isn't it?!?! But "change" is a slow process, and the group has worked on bringing about change, if only in small ways. I can tell you we made attempts towards a living wage here in Colorado that were unsuccessful, we had an "assignment" to email or tweet Bill Maher, some members attended Romanoff's kickoff, some members are helping with the Romanoff campaign, some members write, email, or call their representatives, and some sign tons of petitions. So the meetings are both a time to vent and a time to offer ideas. Please return sometime and feel free to share any ideas you may have concerning how to bring about change.

If you want to either laugh or go a little crazy, check out this exchange with Chris Hayes and his nutcase guest about Medicaid and ACA. http://www.salon.com/2014/03/27/conservative_guest_yells_at_chris_hayes_over_obamacare/

On Wednesday I sent an email to everyone in the group... the topic is health care reform. (It also gets posted in Discussions.) Let me know if you did not get it. I think your settings have to be set to receive emails from group organizers. I can also post it here.

I'm sorry... I have a pretty bad cold or flu, so won't be able to make it tomorrow. I emailed Will to see if he can lead the discussion. I'll make another post, when I hear back. :-(

I had to miss the last one because of a nasty cold, and I have a scheduling conflict for the next :-( I'm especially bummed because I like talking about health-related issues (and know a little about it) and it looks like that might be the topic.

Unfortunately I'll be out of town that week.
