Classic Film Night - Chicago (Silent 1927) $3.00

CHICAGO (1927)

The plot of the film is drawn from the play of the same name by Maurine Dallas Watkins which was in turn based on the true story of Beulah Annan, fictionalized as Roxie Hart (Phyllis Haver), and her spectacular murder of her boyfriend. The silent film adds considerably to the material in Watkins' play, some additions based on the original murder, and some to Hollywood considerations. The murder, which occurs in a very brief vignette before the play begins, is fleshed out considerably. Also, Roxie's husband Amos Hart (played by Victor Varconi) has a much more sympathetic and active role in the film than he does either in the play or in the subsequent musical. The ending is more cruel to Roxie, in keeping with Hollywood values of not allowing criminals to profit too much from their crimes (although she DOES get away with murder).

We've got the 2nd floor room booked beginning at 6:00 PM so you could get settled in early and have a drink and a bite to eat if you wish. Their food prices are very reasonable and it's pretty good. The film will begin at 7:00 sharp.

There is a $3.00 meetup cost for this event and a one drink (soft drink, wine or beer) minimum to support The Central as they're giving us this space for three hours. So please, let's do our best to support them.

After the film, let's hang around and discuss it right at The Central. :)

Directions - Located one block west of Bathurst and Bloor. From your location go to www.mapquest.ca and click "Get Directions." The destination address is 603 Markham Street

Transit - Take the Bloor/Danforth Subway Line to Bathurst Station. Walk one block west along Bloor to Markham St. and you're there. For further TTC info call[masked]-INFO (4636) and dial O to speak with a live person.

Parking - There's a parking lot on Markham Street, just north of Bloor. I believe it's a flat rate of only $4 after 6PM. There's street (meter) parking on Bloor St., and if you're lucky you'll get a spot right in Mirvish Village. If you're parking on the street be sure to read the signs carefully to avoid a fine.

We look forward to seeing you!!

I liked it, but it would be nice if the movies (or at least some) could be in the evenings. I am not the only one I'm sure who prefers and suits their schedule best and not to sound 'negative' but there are plenty of brunch opportunties with a lot of Meetup groups, not just this one.

Is the one Catherine Zeta-Jones was in a remake of this one? Anyway it should be good.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.

Henry, started Reno Motorcycle Riders
