MEMORIES: What do we do with them as we age?

I cleaned out a closet this week and there they were again! Old photos, old journals, letters from friends and family, sweet little messages from my kids when they were young, from grandchildren too.  They are all just old, old memories now.

On a recent to trip to Salt Lake City, I visited the Family History Museum at Temple Square.  The Mormons really know how to do genealogy and folks can come in, explore, poke around and find all kinds of information on their family.  It occurred to me that our memories fade unless preserved in some way. Genealogy is one approach to keeping them of course, but what are some others?

What do YOU do with old memories, old photos, old letters? What will you want done with them when you are no longer their keeper?

Let's talk about memories.  What purpose do they serve if any?  How can they bind us and how can they free us and do we want to have them effect us in any other ways?

I'll post more on this later, but wanted to begin the conversation and hopefully tap into some of your comments before our meetup on the 28th!

I thought this blog post by a friend of mine would be appropriate for this topic.

Always interesting to hear so many takes on the same subject and to get new ideas about what to do with all the 'stuff' we hang on to that we embue with the power of keeping our memories alive.

The discussion was great as always.

There is so much more to talk about with the topic. It just scratched the surface, but I was as usual impressed with the variety and also it helped me with some decisions I'm making just now. Thanks all for the participation

Sorry to miss the conversation - especially cancelling at the last minute. Trying to catch up after a busy weekend.

I need to be somewhere else by 4 pm. I am also helping my daughter get ready to move across country. So am not sure I will be there. Hope to attend for the first hour. Will see. Great topic!

I feel that we keep work from the past because we are proud of our a-complements (not right word)

I've thought about that too Sandra we should have a good discussion on this one

I think that memories are a part of who we are you can;t burn them or throw them away they just are.

    1 · May 22, 2013

Yes I agree all part of us.

    • caroline k.

Well, we can't burn the 'bad' ones, but we can transmute them to the lessons we grow by...

I'll be late as I just got an appointment with the audiologist for 1:30. I'm moving to a studio apartment at Fellowship Square in early June so I'm going through lots of stuff. Those teaching materials are too good to get rid of, aren't they? (Haven't taught
a class since 2008!) And what about the names of people that I lost track of and want to contact again? And all those copies of "Real Simple" - they're too interesting to throw away! Really hope to be there soon after you start.

So have we switched from the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays to the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of every month?

    May 22, 2013

    • Sandy M.

No This was necessary because I had a party this week my apologies for not being clear

To answer you question, NOT a blasted (#@!$%)thing!

I kind of agree Sandra. Certainly there are moments I would like to have back and experiences I'd love to repeat. But material objects - can't think of one. Definitely none that would be worth giving up one thing that is part of my life today!

      1 · May 21, 2013

    • Karen L.

Ditto, Joanne. The material objects in my current possession were, for the most part, chosen by me. Childhood objects were chosen for me by others.

It will be SO good to get back with your fun group, Sandy! BTW, I RSVP'd for the Sunday concert, May 9th... When I put it in my book, noticed it's not THIS Sunday but NEXT! Got it now... so much for my memory! LOL See you next week.

It's all a process Caroline. Will be wonderful to see you again! Things are going well!

Here's a question I just picked up from another blog. Thought it was a good start to our seed questions this next week. I'll be putting out some more thoughts soon on this topic.

If you could exchange one thing you own today for one thing from your childhood, what would it be and why?
    Note: Something material. An object.

You may have noticed I have scheduled this on the 28th. I needed the extra week this month as my own schedule didn't allow for the 21st. Hope this works for everyone

Memories tie us to the past and impinge on the reality of the present.

    May 8, 2013

    • Sandy M.

I think this discussion is an important examination. When we throw our own light on a topic, we become more who we are. Thanks to you both for your thoughts.

      May 8, 2013

  • Karen L.

Good for you, Sandy. I won't be surprised if you find yourself lighter and more free after your burning party. The clues were always there for us in our favorite music. I'm thinking of Joni Mitchell's "Clouds" - "it's love's illusion I recall, I really don't know love at all." Because love can only be experienced in the present. Or Barbra Streisand's "Memories" - "reminding us of the way we were." Of course, the way we were is not the way we are in this moment.

well said and yes, both those tunes have been running through my head too.

      May 8, 2013

When I left home, husband and Hawaii in 2005, I made a big fire in a trash can with all my momentos and "burned away the past." I prefer living in the present because nothing is real but this moment and that includes my thoughts (like this one).

    1 · May 8, 2013

    • Sandy M.

I'm inspired by this, thank you Karen. i am having a burning party for many of my old photos and a few momentos this month as well. It's a process and I too am feeling that living in the moment is how I want to exist.
