The World of Work in LIfe's Third Trimester

We had a full and interesting discussion around Aging We all Do It at our last meetup. New ideas for upcoming topics were also discussed.  Several people showed an interest in the idea of Work during Life's Third Trimester so here are some ideas around that topic. I'll be posting some seed question to accompany this topic soon.  Also look for a list of resources that were suggested from our last meetup discussion. You are all welcome to add to this list, just send me an email and I'll post them.

If we don't change, we don't grow.
If we don't grow, we are not really living.
Growth demands a temporary surrender of security.

~ Gail Sheehy ~

It doesn’t matter what your past experience with the world of work has been. There is a wide range of mix of experiences in our age group.

Some of us have worked for one employer all our lives or a series of employers. Some of us have always been self employed, self generating entrepreneurial persons. Some of us have tried entrepreneurial work during our Learning Years and gone back to employment later as our needs changed.

We have held traditional roles, we have broken free of tradition . We learned and grown from every experience with work we have had. And, that was good for our Learning Years, our first two trimesters.

Here, in the Third Trimester we often experience change in regard to our perspective about the world of work.

  • Days seem shorter
  • Less is more
  • We work when we want, or can
  • We often have the experience of being “fuller” than before
  • Work itself becomes an end, not a means and we actually enjoy it

The idea of re-tire-ment changes too.  It’s as though we get a new set of tires for that vehicle that has served us for so many years. We actually can create a new version of how we want our lives to be after 60.  What are you planning for your new lifestyle? Is work a joy or a necessary burden? How do you view work now?

It was very interesting! Many shared their experience in recent years but many shared good ideas and internet sites. Very informative and a very warm and friendly group of men and women.

We are almost there to meet on this topic and discuss our personal views, experiences and preferences. I don't know about you, but I have been getting good reflective ideas from conversations I've been having around the topic of Work in Life's Third Trimester. It does seem to be "unique". See you there and we will be having another topic posted right after the Meetup. I have a few up my sleeve!

I've always worked and even was a workaholic. It has taken me years to create a structured workless environment where I do the things I enjoy doing, pottery, exercise, volunteering, socializing. I miss being away from the work world but don't miss the stress.

I can certainly relate to that as well Suzanne and hope to have a good discussion around that particular adjustment. This topic has more depth than it first appears to have. I'm looking forward to hearing everyone's take on it.

I think I'll have to pass on this one. My favorite thing about aging is my retirement. Do not wish to work at a job for money. Generating income without working is interesting to me.

Understood Karen, that's probably true for others as well. Not every topic will be right for everyone, I'm sure. Maybe see you at our upcoming social event, I'm posting it soon.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
