Linux: Perf and strace introduction

Introduction to on how to use strace in your daily sysadmin job, be it debugging or just learning what your application actually does. To gain the most from this, you should be familiar with the most basic system calls and be comfortable in a shell. Agenda strace:

* Introduction and examples

* Live go through of examples and (if applicable) other applications.

* strace vs ltrace vs systemtap


Perf is a (rather) new set of kernel counters for Linux. It allows you to profile your system, vms (kvm/xen), applications, filesystem and more. Agenda:

* Counters? Why and how?

* Basic command line usage

* perf? oprofile?

* Common events and how to use in your daily life.


Live workshop, so bring your laptop and a linux distribution of your choice. VM is possible, but bare metal preffered in the perf presentation.
