Editing with vi: Fundamentals

DESCRIPTION:

Most people use about 10% of vi's capabilities and the presentation provides the opportunity to learn more and increase your speed and enjoyment in text editing.

This tutorial covers the history, background and design principles of vi; many vi movement commands; some text alteration commands; and the vi command language syntax.

Attendees should bring a laptop with a "vi" editor for the in-class exercises. No prior experience is required but 20 year veterans of vi have come out raving how much they've learned.

SPEAKER:

Aleksey Tsalolikhin has been a UNIX/Linux system administrator for 14 years. While wrangling EarthLink's server farms by hand during its growth from 1K to 5M users, he developed an abiding interest in improving efficiency and happiness of system administrators through training in configuration management, documentation, sysadmin basics, and personal efficiency. He provides training via www.verticalsysadmin.com.

It's an amazing tool. You can work directly with the text data. It was well taught and full of non-stop information. He only stopped because time was called.

This is one of the better meetups I've been to in regards to how much I learned. Aleksey was an awesome presenter.

Excellent presentation on VI by Alexsey. He took what can often be a not so easy subject to explain and made it easily understandable.

Great presentation. I especially liked history and how in-depth the explanations were, it made it a lot easier to put things into context. Thanks!

The presentation was well done. This was an excellent choice for the first meeting of this new group.

The information was really good and the speaker was great. The only reason it wasn't 5 stars for my experience is I was interested in how to utilize VI from a programmer's perspective--as in how to use it as an IDE or something to that effect. Maybe that's not for a basic's class, but a little more in this direction would have better suited me

wont be able to make this one due to conflict: those wishing to go on to more advanced may want to check out using Vim as your IDE -- http://haridas.in/vim-as-your-ide.html

Hi Dahlia - sorry, no, this won't be recorded. We will be having lots more meetups, including (hopefully) a more advanced vi presentation by Alexsey as well.

    July 31, 2012

    • Dahlia

In that case, no copy or recap of the Basic session, we will be lost in the advanced without the basic. Because there is a follow up and because I wonder why vi now, I would like to have some guidance re this class. But if the second will also be on Thursday evening I will need to pass again. It is all relative.

If others are interested in vi or vim we can chat about it or email me. Also about sed. Thanks for and to all.
