Hike Rock Jock Trail and remove the nonnative plants!

  • June 29, 2014 · 9:00 AM

There are numerous cliffs, and plenty of amazing views along the Rock Jock Trail.  There are a few sections on this trail that have a few stands of Princess Trees and/or Chinese Silvergrass.  Two invasive plants that threaten to spread and choke out the native plants and wildlife.  We'll carry tools to remove these, as we enjoy the all the beauty that this trail has to offer.  Tools and training will be provided.  Please come prepared for rain, wear sturdy hiking boots, with 2 -3 liters of water and snacks and lunch for yourself.   This trail is close to 4 miles long with all the side trails added.  We'll have a car parked at each end so to not need to hike back. In areas of this trail there is little shade, so sunblock and a sun hat are recommended.  Please RSVP to let me know if you are coming, and so that I can let you know if the trip is canceled or not due to the weather or for whatever reason.  Looking forward to showing you my favorite trail in Linville!

It was a great day! The forecast seemed to guarantee rain, but that didn't scare us. We definitely got wet from the night before's rain, but it never rained on us. The waterfalls on the trail were all high, and views were sparse do to fog. We cut back lots of Princess Tress and Silvergrass. Some were about to go to seed, so it was extra awesome to take care of these before they had the chance to spread again! It was a great and fun crew!

Thanks so much for going out there and looking for the hoe, Rob. I know that the trail does need a lot more lopping. We worked on some sections heavily, and others very lightly. The forecast was calling for big amounts of rain later in the day, and we wanted to get out of there before that came. I'll be back out there again soon to grab the hoe and do a little more lopping along the way. Also looking to plan an overnight trip there in early fall so that with a group of us, we can really cut back the seasonal growth so that it isn't so crazy thick!

Cool. That sounds like fun! I definitely saw all the lopping you did. Seemed pretty clear you started at the south end and ran out of time to do much in the north. Great y'all did anything at all on such a lousy day!

Looks like I waited too long to officially sign up, because Meetup says it's "now closed to RSVPs." I was trying to talk Mike C into going, but he really wants to go bike riding. The thing is, I haven't been in the Gorge in long time, so I wanted to go. Maybe if I tell him that the famous "Wes Love" will be there! ;-) Anyway, looks like there's still room for me to go, if you only have four people. Kayah, let me know if the group is actually full, thanks!

Hmmm... no sleep for me AT ALL last night - insomnia, the bane of my existence! Think I'm gonna have to bail after all. :-(

Yes! I had in mind csmping under the large overhang on Conley Cove that we looked at last time. Claire and I want to get away from the road and use our packs. Y'all up for that?

Claire has a migraine and might not be coming with me. snap a pic of your campsite and text me as I might want to hang with you guys instead of under the rock by myself...

I will be bringing my 23 yr daughter. Thinking about csmping in that cave but also aware that the varmints bugs etc will require tents. Any thoughts on short backpack to camp spots close to the trail head? I don't want to wear her out Sat but would like to get in the woods a bit to camp.

I'll for sure think about finding one on Rock Jock, OR I might talk it over with Claire about camping on the road with you guys, Melissa. When were you planning to get there?

Around I'd guess 10am.....we may end up anywhere to be honest. But WE will be there to work on Sunday. :)
