Hi Lydia, Had to laugh as I read the first sentence in Of Human Bondage: "The day broke gray and dull." Anyway, here goes! Lynn

Thanks so much, Lynn, for your thoughtful analysis and contributions to the group! It's a pleasure having you there. Thanks for your book recommendations as well. This will be a huge help going forward!!!

I was surprised that Lord Jim was favored over Heart of Darkness by some members of the group and that quite a few members did not like Heart of Darkness. The reasons varied and were quite interesting--too wordy, paragraphs too long, main character of Kurtz never really developed, negative portrayal of Africans, too much description and not enough plot. I was just as awed by Heart this time as the first time I read it in my teens. I had not read Lord Jim before but really loved the first part of the story (the conundrum surrounding the pilgrim ship), yawned through the middle part, and then loved the end when Jim found himself (maybe) at the end of the earth on Patusan. I noticed in NYT Book Review[masked] that the Colombian author of the lead review has written a novel about Joseph Conrad who wrote about Columbia in Nostromo. I'm going to look into that book if I can find it.

I plan to attend and hope Heart of Darkness is discussed first. I will stay as long as I can. Vicki will be coming with me. She is looking forward to participating in the group.

Hi Lydia, Regarding our conversation last book group, I noticed in the Sunday Conn Post that there was a showing of the Paris National Opera's Don Quixote last Sunday at 2 pm at the Bow Tie Royale 6 on the Post Road in East Norwalk. I can't find any notice of a re-showing but the theatre's phone number is[masked]-8797. Maybe you can find out if they are running it again. I thought you and/or your daughter might be interested.
About Conrad, I am just amazed at what beautiful English he wrote in considering he didn't learn the language until relatively late. See you on Aug 3.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.

Henry, started Reno Motorcycle Riders
