Freelance Whales + Geographer

$18.50 + charges

One of our favorite eclectic bands Freelance Whales returns to D.C. for what is their first headlining show at the 9:30 Club. This indie rock band from Queens NY has wowed us on several occasions, and we look forward to some new music from them on Halloween.  This four man and one woman group includes frontman Judah Dadone (lead vocals, banjo, acoustic and electric guitar, synthesizer, bass), and bandmates Doris Cellar (bass, harmonium, glockenspiel, synthesizer, vocals), Chuck Criss (banjo, bass, synthesizer, glockenspiel, harmonium, acoustic and electric guitar, vocals), Jacob Hyman (drums, percussion, vocals) and Kevin Read (acoustic and electric guitar, glockenspiel, mandolin, synthesizer, vocals). Their song "Location" from the Weathervanesalbum was featured in LOL, Starring Miley Cyrus and Demi Moore. There song "Starring," also from Weathervanes was featured on an episode of Grey's Anatomy.  We loved the first album Weathervanes and the second album Diluviawas released last week (October 9th).

Entertainment Weekly : "It's the best electronic indie-pop debut since Ben Gibbard last tuned his laptop."

SPIN : "Armed with dreamy melodies, charmingly terrible pickup lines, and a vibrant band-geek orchestra carting harmoniums and glockenspiels, this New York quintet makes tenderhearted nerdiness sound like a powerful strength."

NPR : "This kitchen-sink collective builds from a heartbreaking quiver to a cinematic sprawl with a grace reminiscent of Broken Social Scene."

NPR : "Freelance Whales' songs sound like a mixture of Sufjan Stevens' sugary sweet chamber pop and The Arcade Fire's propulsive, exultant hymns."he members of Freelance Whales make incredibly infectious, jubilant music with soaring, five-part harmonies, banjo, harmonium, glockenspiel, acoustic guitar and lots of soulful energy."

ESQUIRE: "this band, with its uncontrived curiosity for harmony, higher ground, and all those damn instruments, could soar to the anthemic heights reached by Arcade Fire and Fleet Foxes..."

Opening this show is San Franciso Electro / Indie / Rock band Geographer.  Show has 6:00 pm doors so expect the Whales to start around 8:30 pm as there is another show at 11 pm.
