Sunday Afternoon Jazz Quintet House Concert in San Francisco

  • Apr 14, 2013 · 3:30 PM
  • Jazz Chez Hanny

This is somewhat last-minute notice, but this should be a good show. I've been wowed by both the pianist (Adam Shulman) and the trumpet player (Erik Jekabson) at various shows over the years, so I figure that's a good indicator that the whole group will be worth hearing.

WHAT: Harvey Wainapel Quintet (sax/clarinet; piano; trumpet; piano; bass)

http://www.chezhanny.com/wainapel_2013.html

WHEN: Music starts at 4:00 p.m.

WHERE: Chez Hanny, a long-running Sunday afternoon jazz salon, held in a private residence

COST: $20 at the door. CASH ONLY.

RESERVATIONS: Email reservations strongly suggested by the salon organizer. Email to:

[masked] (Mention "jazz" or "Chez Hanny" or "concert" in the subject line to avoid being mistaken for spam)

SEATING: Seating is first come, first served. Doors open a half-hour before the show. I emailed Mr. Hanny on Friday to ask about capacity, and he said it's best to RSVP by noon Saturday, but in any case, he'll tell folks if it looks as though the show will sell out. (He said he's never had to turn anyone away, but the first set has sometimes been standing-room-only.)

NOTE: All $$ goes to the musicians, so it's best to RSVP to the homeowner/salon organizer only if you're sure you'll be attending.

FOOD: Potluck event. Please bring food or drink to share.

See more details on the venue, directions, parking and transportation (short bus ride from Glen Park BART station) on the Jazz Chez Hanny website:  http://www.chezhanny.com/

Had lots of fun meeting & talking with very nice Meetup members & listening to excellent music in an informal setting. My first time at this venue and I'd definitely recommend it, based on today. You get at least 2 hrs of music for a suggested donation of $20 (all $ goes to the musicians). The space sits about 50 people (on metal folding chairs). Folks are encouraged to bring food or drink; it's put out on a bar, and people help themselves before and after the music and during the intermission. The place filled up, so getting there when doors open a half-hr beforehand for preferred seats is key. It also gives you a chance to mingle; the audience was very friendly and many seemed to be regulars. (Tip: if you're running late, you may still be able to get in -- the door shouldn't be locked but it might stick --they allow standees, and there are sometimes a couple of stools to sit on in back or behind the bar -- but I recommend making advance reservations and getting there early.)

One more 'housekeeping' note: if you RSVP'd yes but realize you can't attend, pls change yr RSVP to No. Makes it easier to round up folks at event. Thanks!

IMPORTANT: Just FYI in case anyone's unsure from my Event Description above: People are responsible for making their own reservations for the jazz salon (or taking their chances by showing up without having made advance reservations). The venue's website lists the email address as: [masked] (but if that doesn't work for you, try lowercasing the whole thing). Also, Mr. Hanny's phone number is 415/552-2729. See more details here: http://www.chezhanny.com/

Also, if anyone's stuck as to ideas on what to bring for the jazz salon's potluck portion of the event, some easy things would be any of the following:

--some good bread and cheese (that's what I'm doing)
--wine, juice, soft drinks or hard cider
    --brownies
--a crumble or crisp or clafouti
    --fruit salad
    --hummus and pita chips
--deli item salads, Middle Eastern food, etc.

also, I would think that things like store-bought cookies or chips would be fine to bring as well...

I've emailed my cellphone number to folks who've RSVPed as of 10:15 p.m. on Saturday, so be sure to check your email for that if you need to get hold of me by phone before the show. (If others RSVP on Sunday, I'll email my number separately to them.) Looking forward to meeting folks for an afternoon of good music :)
