Free Outdoor Show: Jazz at Yerba Buena Gardens

Let's check out a 90-minute double bill that features a mix of jazz and the music of Mali. The event, part of the annual Yerba Buena Gardens Festival, is a tribute to Khalil Shaheed, bandleader, educator and founder of the Oaktown Jazz Workshop, an after-school program for teens. Shaheed's group Mansa Musa, now under the direction of saxophonist Richard Howell, blends jazz with the traditional music of Mali. The Oaktown Jazz Workshop Performance Ensemble joins in for an afternoon of jazz classics.

The concert is 90 minutes long and is held outdoors. There is often some seating set up near the stage for Yerba Buena Garden Festival shows, but that's not a sure-fire thing, and any seating they do provide is limited, so it's a good idea to bring a beach towel, blanket or low-backed folding chair to put between yourself and the grassy Esplanade seating.

COST: This is a FREE, general-admission show, with no tickets or reservations needed.

WHEN/WHERE TO MEET: Let's aim to meet up by 12:15 p.m. in front of the Starbucks located at 7 Third Street (between Market and Mission). By 12:30 p.m., we'll walk about a block to Yerba Buena for the concert, which goes from 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.

HOW TO FIND ME: I'm WF, 5 feet tall, Boomer generation, with short auburn hair. I'll send my cellphone number to RSVPers before the event. And I'll carry an Oakland Museum shoulder bag (white bag with orange lettering).

Great sun, great music. The kora player and young drummer were standout. Nice meeting the people I talked to. Thanks Paula for organizing this!

Fun afternoon! Got acquainted with a number of very nice Meetup members whom I hadn't met previously and caught some terrific music in the brilliant San Francisco sunshine. The Oaktown youth ensemble was solid, and the headliners were fantastic, especially on their extended percussion and horn segments. An added treat: a guest artist from Mali, on kora, sat in with the headliners. The Meetup jazzfans were split between the sunnier and the shadier sections of the Esplanade, but had a good chance to mingle at different intervals even so. ... Apart from that, we seemed to have about a 50 percent no-show rate on this event, which is always somewhat surprising to me (Cmon, folks, I'm a pinky finger texter and even I can manage to change my RSVP marker from Yes to No on my phone) -= but on the plus side, everyone who did come to the event seemed to have a good time, and that's the important thing :)

Ciao! I plan to go a little earlier (11:00 or 11:30) to eat a picnic lunch and try to save space. I hope to be able to do this for the whole group. If anyone else wants to join me please text or call: (415)[masked]

Hi, all - I'll email my cellphone number to folks tonight (Friday), so be sure to look for that in your email. Also, if we miss you at Starbucks and you have problems finding the group at Yerba Buena, it's best to phone or text me at that point or leave a Comment on the Meetup page for ths event. If we're missing anyone when we get situated at the concert location, I'll post a Comment on the Event page describing approximately where we're sitting. If your plans change and you can't make the event, please remember to change your RSVP to No. Otherwise, see you Saturday :)

hi, if you decide you'd like to join us at Yerba Buena rather than meeting up in advance at Starbucks (where I figure it'll be easier to round folks up), feel free to RSVP. and then call or text me when you get to the Gardens.
