An Evening of Be-Bop

An evening of ''straight ahead" be-bop, featuring the compositions of Thelonious Monk, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, John Lewis and Benny Golson, as well as standards by Richard Rodgers, Cole Porter, Irving Berlin and others.

Featuring: Dick Whittington - piano; Andrew Speight - saxophone; Dan Robbins - bass; and Vince Lateano - drums.

MORE SHOW INFO:

http://piedmontpiano.com/concerts/140906dickwhittington.html

COST: Buy your own tickets. $20 in advance (call the piano store during business hours to charge your ticket over the phone) or pay at the door. CASH ONLY at the door. Seating is general admission. Tickets are typically available at the door.

Phone: (510)[masked]
http://piedmontpiano.com/Webpages/hoursdirections.html

WHEN/WHERE TO MEET: If not doing dinner beforehand, let's meet outside the store's main doors at 7:30 p.m. (The show starts at 8:00 p.m.) If we're missing any stragglers, I'll post a Comment to the Event Page saying where we're seated.

HOW TO FIND ME: I'm WF, 5 feet tall, in my fifties, with short auburn hair. My photo is on my Meetup profile, and I'll send my cellphone number to RSVPers. If you don't spot me, feel free to phone or text me. I'll keep my phone on until the performance starts.

PRE-SHOW DINNER OPTION: As of noon Friday, 2 of us are planning to do dinner before the show. Non-diners may want to consider having a drink together at a nearby bar after the show, to get more of a chance to mingle. Note that there is typically NO food or drink offered at the piano store.

LOCATION/TRANSIT: The piano store is located several blocks from the 19th Street BART station in uptown Oakland. There is typically free street parking in the area. (I think the lot next door to the store is restricted-use.)

Thanks, Robert for taking and posting notes. I would add that Easy to Love was also written by Cole Porter, my favorite composer!

I've a tightly scheduled weekend and not sure I can make this--if anyone else joins waitlist I'll drop off (and then reenlist) so as not to impede their chances of making it into the group.

Had to cancel. Money is limited.

Yall have fun I'm seeing the California Honeydrops in Santa Cruz this weekend - they're playing at Fillmore in SF on October 18th if anyone wants to go. I discovered them at Monterey Jazz festival last year. They put on the best show - major dance party - mix of jazz blues and funk - omg so great. Hope to see yall there in October :)

    • Paula M.

Thanks for the heads up. Have fun! :) ... I'll change your RSVP for the be-bop event to No. Catch you next time !

      1 · September 4, 2014

  • Paula M.

NOTE to RSVPers: If you want join in an (optional) dinner before the show, please email me to indicate your interest, along with your phone number, by this Thursday at 9:00 p.m., so I can follow up with the restaurant. I can likely accommodate a table of up to 6 people. (So far, I've heard from one person.) ... And, as always, if you realize you can't make the show, be sure to change your RSVP on the Meetup site to No, so that you don't get counted as a No-Show.

I see there are already 4 people on the waitlist. Still, I assume the music portion of the event itself is public? I might like to go especially if someone has room for one more from the Alamo Square area. I especially like Andrew Speight and haven't caught him since the much-missed Dogpatch days.

    August 31, 2014

    • Paula M.

I'm going to expand the RSVP list momentarily, since it turns out there's so much interest. Good to hear about Andrew Speight; I haven't heard him before (aside from YouTube clips, which sound good). What was the Dogpatch place where he played? Or is that the name of the venue?

Yeah Dogpatch Saloon used to have great jazz every Sunday, in the Dogpatch area in San Francisco. Andrew Speight and Vince Lateano worth both pretty much regulars but it was also a jazz jam. Alas the change in ownership there seems to have killed that, although I've heard some people moved over to 7 Mile, but 7 Mile is not so accessible for me.

I'd like to do dinner too - Thai sounds great :)
