The Charles Mingus Ensemble, founded at UCLA in the fall of 2011, brings together students with backgrounds in jazz, classical, and world music to integrate compositional and improvisational traditions, following in the footsteps of composer, bassist and bandleader Charles Mingus. The ensemble plays compositions by jazz greats including Mingus, as well as originals composed by members of the ensemble and the occasional foray into music from outside the jazz canon. Tonight offers the chance to see a new generation of musicians inspired by the spirit and creativity of Charles Mingus.

WHEN/WHERE TO MEET: Meet just outside the main doors by 7:30 p.m.(The show starts at 8:00 p.m.) I'll aim to hang around outside the doors from about 7:25 to 7:40 p.m. to corral any stragglers, and then I'll go in and find the rest of the group. if we're still missing people when I go inside, I'll post a message to this Event Page saying where we're seated, so latecomers can find us, and I'll leave my cellphone on until the music starts.
HOW TO FIND ME: I'm WF, 5 feet tall, in my fifties, with short auburn hair. See my photos on the Meetup site. I'll wear a black v-neck short-sleeved top and black pants, and carry my Oakland Museum shoulder bag (see a photo of the bag with my Meetup profile and photo). I'll send my cellphone number to RSVPers before the show.
TRANSIT: The Freight is located less than a block from the downtown Berkeley BART station and AC Transit bus stops. There is a paid parking lot down the street (I think you have to go around the corner to enter it, though), and free street parking is also typically available as you get farther away from Shattuck.
