Have you been diagnosed with a chronic and/or life threatening illness? Have you been told there is no cure and you are trying to figure out how to accept this "new normal"? Are you determined not to let your diagnosis define you or drag you down? Then this group is for you. Please join us to talk about ways to live our lives positively in spite of a scary diagnosis.
I have been living with chronic and life threatening illness since age 15 and I have dealt with it in numerous ways - some ways worked, some ways didn't. There were the self-destructive years, denial years and I believe I am currently living in the acceptance years. There is always a little overlap between them, but I think I have found a way to learn to live with my disease in a way that brings me joy, peace and happiness. (Most of the time) It's a bumpy road, but I find that the road seems smoother when I'm not riding alone.
It was 1978 when I was initially diagnosed with a rare blood disorder (Pulmonary Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis) that caused scarring in both my lungs. Then in 2010 I was diagnosed with another rare disease called Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension. Both of these diseases can be managed but not cured and both are most definitely life threatening.. It wasn't until this latest diagnosis that I really took my lung disease seriously and also realized I had a choice to make. How am I going to life my life? Was I going to spend it wallowing in self pity and wondering why me? Well, yeah sometimes - I'd be lying if I said I didn't get frustrated with my physical health. But those are not the thoughts and feelings that I want front and center all the time. I want gratitude front and center. And peace and serenity and acceptance.
Now that I've had the chance to practice living positively for a while, I decided it was time to share what I've learned and also find out how others cope as well.
Many thanks go to Danea Horn for starting this group and allowing me to take the reins. I can't wait to meet you!
