We are a social group, who enjoy cycling, at a more relaxed pace, rather than heads down and going as fast as you can. We normally average 30-40 miles, however we do have longer runs from time-to-time.
Our group is the West Lothian part of the Lothian & Borders Cyclists' Touring Club, with other groups in Berwick, The Borders and of course Edinburgh, who groups you can also ride with. All leaders of the Cyclists' Touring Club are qualified, very experienced and most important insured, so members can achieve maximum enjoyment and hopefully feel assured that they are well looked after.
The West Lothian group now two years old normally attracts 10-15 people, which I feel is a number we can cope with, and easy to keep a group together on our rides. We always stop for a pub lunch, or picnic in nice weather. Our pace is fairly slow prepared to other groups, with lots of opportunities to stop. On many rides we like to stop at varies attractions, gardens, and local community events, maximising the cycling experience, yet not feeling pressured to completing a full days bike ride in one go. There is always opportunities to shorten rides or after lunch members wishing for a longer ride, may feel free to extend their trip, while the rest of the group normally take the more direct route back to base. Our rides are suitable for most age groups, and people from all sort of backgrounds, which also reflect the types of bikes, let it be sit-up-and beg bikes, mountain bike or the latest touring cycles, but aslong as your bike is in a road worthy condition, you and your bike well be made welcome, and please bring a spare inner tube with you plus warm clothing, normally I would advise layers of clothing, because you will get warm and cold during the ride.
Although I don't look it, I enjoy the slower paced bike ride, and for me the social aspect of the ride is very important, which is why I always feel it's a must to stop often. I have lead or been members of many cycling clubs for the past twenty five years, although felt their was too many racing clubs in West Lothian, and not enough touring clubs, which was the style of cycling that I was use too. However, I felt it was time to start a touring club of my own, and two years later we are still here. I would consider myself a very experienced cyclist, having toured large parts of the world, including Europe, Asia, Austrialia, Canada, USA and recently South America, where my latest trip took me through the Atacama desert through Chile and Bolivia.
I look forward to inviting you on our rides, and also would like to draw your attention about all the other benefits that the Cyclists Touring Club has to offer, including tours, national events, local campaigning, insurance, etc. However, like most benefits they don't come free, and the Cyclists Touring Club does charge a membership (free for the first number of rides, until you are sure this group is right for you), however I'm sure once you have been on a few rides with us, you will instantly see all the benefits membership offers, and to such good quality, that many other groups can't offer.
